WASHINGTON — Freshman Rep. Michele Bachmann said she was hoping to boost President Bush’s morale when she kissed him after he delivered his State of the Union address Tuesday evening.

“With the president’s poll numbers, he could use a little encouragement,” the Republican from Minnesota’s 6th Congressional District said Wednesday. “It was absolutely spontaneous.”

Bachmann, who was attending her first State of the Union speech, said she was standing along the aisle as Bush was leaving the House of Representatives chamber.

“He was giving handshakes and kissing the ladies,” she said. “I was pleased to greet him. We have a very good relationship.”
