Ex-Duke player sues over grade; accuser gives birth
Associated Press via ESPN

RALEIGH, N.C. -- A former Duke University lacrosse player sued the university Thursday, alleging that one of his professors unfairly gave him a failing grade because he was a member of the team.

Meanwhile, the woman who said she was raped at a lacrosse party last March gave birth to a girl Wednesday at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, a person familiar with the case told The Associated Press. The source spoke anonymously because the information had not yet been made public.

Dowd, who was not charged in the case, claims in his lawsuit that visiting professor Kim Curtis engaged in "outrageous and unethical conduct" when she gave him an F in a politics and literature class. The lawsuit claims he had earned C's on his assignments until that point.

The university later changed Dowd's grade to a D, citing a calculation error. But Dowd claims the incident nearly kept him from graduating. Dowd and his parents are asking for the grade to be changed to a "P" for passing, and want $60,000 in damages.

1. This story was from January 4, 2007
And Mike Nifong got his ass kicked, as did the PC thugs who tried to turn this whole episode into something out of a movie on the Lifetime Channel.

6. The wrongly accused boys, yes I do.
I don't know enough about this "F" grade case to form an opinion.

For your information, one of these wrongfully accused players, after transferring to another school, formed a student organization to work for the rights of wrongfully accused and wrongfully convicted persons.

10. Well, he was fairly white.
And he WAS accused of rape. So he MUST be guilty. Of something. Or another.

4. They should give him a "G"
For "Go Fuck Yourself, You Spoiled Asshole."

Nothing like the sense of outraged entitlement.

7. He considered a C a passing grade?
Sorry, but I can't imagine anyone getting a C in college. I got exactly one, and still am disappointed-in myself for not understanding the course subject well enough. Hard work and diligence should earn any scholar at least a B in a class, I would think.

9. Honestly? If it's true this is *very* serious.
Academic integrity is very important. Your grade should be reflected by one thing and one thing only: your performance in the class. Anything else is a very serious threat to the open intellectual environment an institution of higher learning should promote, especially one of the caliber of Duke. If you recall, there were certainly professors whose behavior at the time were, well, inappropriate to say the least. This is not only important to this one student, but too all students.

If the charge is BS, I'm sure that will become evident quickly. If they can prove it, a well deserved smackdown is just what the doctor ordered.
