Remember the last massive Vietnam anti-war demonstration in Washington? The 37th anniversary is coming up next week.

I was a US Army draftee stationed in DC, and the Major threatened us with all kinds of shit if anyone participated. Several of us said "fuck it" and went anyway. I had never seen that many people in one place in my life. Anyway, tell me your stories. Were any of you among those arrested early Sunday morning?

1. I might have been there. I was definitely in the city.

2. I was on the corner of Woodward and Fort in downtown Detroit.

God bless you for being there. I was 19 and in downtown Detroit, and it was one hell of a big demonstration there that day, too. Not Washington, but it was heartfelt.

Was among those arrested--and herded into RFK Stadium. Too young to have gone myself, but I still remember it. Were you sent to RFK? I recall THAT almost caused a far worse crowd-control problem than any of the marches ever did. Typical over-reaction by Nixon, though in retrospect, I guess we could expect such a thing from the SECOND-biggest crook and liar ever to occupy the Oval Office!:eyes:

10. No, I wasn't arrested.

I left late Sunday afternoon before all that shit happened. Had to report back to the Army at 6:00 AM Monday morning.

It was about the Cambodia invasion. Kent State took place around that time.

I was at George Washington University. We "hosted" the demonstration to some degree (i.e., housed thousands of students and the campus pretty much closed down). We had our own semi-violent confrontation with the DC police.

11. No, it was May Day weekend of 1971. I was a civilian living in Georgia in 1970.

The 1971 demonstrations came in late-April and early-May. It was that week that John Kerry testified before Congress.

My dad was in the military, so no way we were going, though my best friend and fourth-grade girlfriend went.

They said I was throwing missiles (rocks) at passing cop cars. I wasn't.

I had just gotten out of class and was soaking the sun on Bascom Hill. The class was Philosophy of NonViolence.

I was in a huge march in San Francisco simultaneous with one in DC, but I don't remember which year it was. I think it must have been 1970 because I was still living in the City. Whenever it was, it was an amazing event ... the largest number of people I had seen in one place, too. I remember all along the route, from downtown all the way out to Golden Gate Park, people were waving to us from their windows, giving us food and drinks. Cesar Chavez and Leonard Nimoy spoke, among others. The Youngbloods, CS&N, Jefferson Airplane played. It was great.

Last October I marched in San Francisco again and was joined by my dear old friend with whom I marched in 1970. It's kind of a bittersweet experience now ... it's wonderful to share the fellowship again, but sad that it's under the same circumstances -- another stupid war. Deja vu all over again.

17. Not arrested, but it was quite close...I was fleeter of foot.

That was the third "large" crowd I had been in.

I was in "dress greens", just out of jump school and well involved with seriously protesting.
Which is why I think a particular gaggle of coppers were right miffed when they failed to bag me.

I guess in their eyes national symbols and fire don't mix...
