Edited on Sat Apr-26-08 01:41 PM by truthpusher
I will be getting a $1500 check shortly and it will be going straight into savings....

Without regard to the politics of it all.... what will you be spending your $600 on?

I might invest in alternative energy or put it toward materials for a barn for the chickens and the cows. I will use it somehow to counter this mess the government has created.

The other half will come from mr. frazzled's $600 share. And then we will still owe more cash to the dentist.

I could list a number of other unanticipated big-ticket items that have cropped up over the last months that this stimulus check will partially offset.

....and it's being deposited directly into my checking account. Three hundred bucks ain't lifestyle changing money. And since it's only an advance on next year's tax return, I'm inclined to let it sit in some kind of savings account until next year, when I get shorted on my regular tax return. Not sure what I'm going to do, but I sure as fuck ain't gonna give it right back to the corporations. That would be stupid.

I would have turned it around right away and sent it back to the IRS as a 2008 tax payment since it isn't a rebate. It's just a loan until next April 15th. Be careful it doesn't put you into the status of tax underpayment, folks!

45. Actually, it's non-taxable, no strings attached
Or so sayeth the IRS website: http://www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/0,,id=179211,00.html
What is it? It's an economic stimulus payment that more than 130 million households will receive starting in May. It's not taxable, and it won't reduce your 2007 or 2008 refund or increase the amount you owe when you file your 2008 return.

46. Copied from the IRS website
Q. Is my Stimulus Payment taxable?

A. No. You will not owe tax on your payment when you file your 2008 federal income tax return. But you should keep a copy of the IRS letter you receive later this year listing the amount of your payment.

Q. If my Stimulus Payment is not going to affect my 2008 tax refund or increase the tax I owe next year, why is it I need to retain the letter that lists how much I received?

A. In the event you do not qualify for the full amount on your 2007 return but you do on your 2008 return, you will need to have the letter as a record of the amount you previously received.

Q. Will the payment I receive in 2008 reduce my 2008 refund or increase the amount I owe for 2008?

A. No, the Stimulus Payment will not reduce your refund or increase the amount you owe when you file your 2008 return.

Very cool! If you haven't checked it out, do so. You can give microloans (of as little as $25) to people who need it for this or that, all across the world. You don't get any interest, but once your money is repaid (in 6 mos, 12 mos---all the loans have different terms, with monthly payments), you can take it back, or loan it out to different folks.

70. Not getting a dime. Disabled, but took $80K out of 401K in 2007 for med expenses and down
payment on a house, which put me over the top in their calculations. Naturally, the $37K in med expenses gets whittled down by the 7% of income to start. Plus, since I take my disabled daughter on my taxes, she didn't qualify for her $300 either. The house I bought was for her since her doc really wants her to have as much independence as possible. The rents for townhomes are atrocious so I bit the bullet and bought her a small home that between the two of us, we can pay the mortgage on hers.

So, while I continue to eat peanut butter sandwiches and try to come up with the $310 weekly for her doctor, I guess I'm too rich to get Bush's bribe this year. Don't get me wrong, I know we're luckier than alot of Americans, but this still frosts my ass!

77. My mother board fried last week
so I had to buy a new computer on my credit card. I'll be putting the $600 toward that, most likely, unless I go crazy and buy some photography equipment. I had originally planned to get a ball head for my Gorillapod until the computer thing happened.
