NY cardinal criticizes Rudy Giuliani for taking Communion during papal visit

New York Cardinal Edward Egan says Rudy Giuliani should not have received Holy Communion during the pope's visit because he supports abortion rights.

Egan says he had "an understanding" with the former presidential candidate and New York mayor that he is not to receive the Eucharist. The Catholic Church teaches "that abortion is a grave offense against the will of God," Egan said.

The cardinal said Monday that Giuliani broke that understanding when he received the Eucharist during Pope Benedict XVI's visit earlier this month.

Egan says he will be seeking a meeting with Giuliani "to insist that he abide by our understanding."

1. Adolf?
That's a bit harsh to use on an old guy who everyone laughs at already.

2. I thought Catholics who were married outside of the Church
were forbidden from taking Communion because they're considered to be "living in sin".

11. So that still leaves him one divorce
It's still a sin whether you do it once or a hundred times according to their own rules.

5. So pro-choice Catholics may not receive communion?
I didn't know that. Is that a stated policy?

18. I think it's about politicians
who try to legislate. Individual catholics who are of the opinion that abortion should be kept legal, though rare... yet would choose not to have an abortion, nor enable someone else to have an abortion... are permitted, I believe, to receive communion.

10. Oh well. Only Catholics regularly attending mass and
"in a state of grace" could take communion at a wedding I attended recently. To hell with everyone else, I guess. I guess standing between a person and God is what some priests do best.

13. It's one of the rules I never understood
You'd think those of us not in a "state of grace" would be in greater need of Communion than those who are.

16. It's for your own safety.
If you're not in a state of grace, then The Host will attach itself to your face and lay eggs. And then soon, Jesus will burst out of your chest, killing you.

15. I can't believe he didn't mention the second divorce, which
was never annulled.

Guess that means remarried New Yorkers can go back to taking Communion.

17. Personally?
I think the Cardinal is right. Guiliani should have refrained. And it's not just about his abortion stance. It's also about the state of his marriage. I don't think he was ever granted an annullment, either, for his previous marriage. So he is not in communion with the church.

21. Judi isn't Catholic anymore, either.
She became a Presbyterian while married to Bruce Nathan, who called her a “social climber” whose “main goal in life was being involved in whatever was ‘the in thing’ at the moment.” Apparently, being Presbyterian was in at the time.
