Poll question: Is Having A Good Time A Bad Thing? It's Time To Play.... Distraction DU Poll

It never fails. I will include, in a post, something innocuous that I do that has nothing to do with POLITICS... (OH NO!) Like playing video games with my kids, going to a movie, having friends over for a BBQ or HEAVEN FORBID.... Watching American Idol (David Cook better fucking win I tell ya.) and not just one person but several will stumble upon my harmless post and shit all over it with their bossy crap. "Go ahead and lubricate your brain with distractions you moran" was a cult favorite. And so, I ask...WTF? :wtf: and then please include a post of your own which explains either (a) why you feel you need to tell everyone else what they should be doing or (b) your favorite distraction and feelings about having your distraction parade rained on.

Me and my bartender wanna know.... Yes... That's me... Gilligan

1. Distractions are good.
The only thing that's great about the stress of being 2.5 weeks from graduating with a Bachelor's degree about 17 years after I started thanks to life intervening is... No time to read GD:P, very little time to read DU.

I hate seeing nice people get pooped on just because they didn't say something horrible about any of the candidates. For years, I never went in the Lounge here. Now it's pretty much the only place I look since it's usually much more silly and civil than the rest of the board.

I'm not a drinker, but working on group projects with burnt out college seniors is going to make me start. :-)

Have a great day!

2. Congratulations
on the college degree. :hi:

I love the lounge. But I always have to look in the GD and GDP - it's like a train wreck and a exploding building all in one - ya gotta see it....

3. I can't take that level of meanness.
The world is a harsh enough place without people going ape at other people.

The anonymity of the internet lets some people just run wild since they're only typing at a faceless name. What is hardest about it is that the loudest person wins. Not the person who's right. I have posted many times on some topics that I have a unique level of knowledge about. I like to help people out when I can with things that I know or have a lot of experience in. But if it's a hot button issue, I'm told that I'm wrong, a corporate stooge, or worst, that I might as well just go work for the Republicans. I come to DU to learn, but once in a while am in a position to teach. Some people have a preconceived notion of how things work, and don't like hearing that some things aren't a conspiracy.

And thanks! It's been a LONG time coming. I don't know when I would have finished it if I hadn't had my job sent overseas. But when I could tell it was coming, I sold my house, and prepared to just take a couple years out of the world of employment to finish it.

5. I'll give you a hint.
Of late, which industry has been laying off people by the thousands?

The one my degree is in. :-)

Ok, so it's a business degree in finance. But I did it for other reasons. My background is tech. I did the finance because if I go back into tech, I wanted a much better understanding of how the markets all work. If I get a finance job, awesome. If I get a tech job, and use the finance degree to invest on the side and help my family make better decisions with their 401k and such, works for me.

It's upsetting the career counselors at school. They say what do you want to do. And unlike the fresh faced 21 year olds that are saying "I want to do X!" I say, "I want a decent job that pays my bills and lets me invest on the side. But one where I'm working human hours, no pager leash, and am free to continue to live a normal life outside of work." They don't know what to think about that. Work/Life balance? What?

6. I was going to guess
Teachers in CA

The voters here thought Arnold would turn the economy around. He promised that he would make massive cuts in the budget. Now the idiots who voted for him are all pissy.
They are shocked that he did what he promised - He slashed away and now thousands of jobs are gone.

I think a degree in finance is a good thing.

Tech is great too.

7. It's unreal that teachers are treated so poorly.

In my opinion, it's a process. I think we're going to see wide spread private companies delivering education to those who can afford it at some point.

When I was young, you knew which school wouldn't do well because of what neighborhood it was in. When schools are funded by property taxes, no poor neighborhood can pay for the basics while schools in very wealthy areas have access to unbelievable tools.

But in the not too distant future, even schools in good neighborhoods will fail as the money is moved into private schools. That land of opportunity thing sure seems to be slipping away.

If I hadn't saved so much money when I was working, there is no way I could have afforded to go finish my degree. It's expensive and I had to go 1.5 years without income but still pay rent/car/food. Being bitter and lonely, I was able to save a lot. :-)

But people with families would have had a very hard time doing what I did. I could see in my old profession that the lack of a degree kept a lot of doors shut. At least I have a way to open some of them now.

8. I only started paying attention to politics in late 2002,
when it was looking more and more like the USA was seriously going to invade Iraq. It was a wake up call.

I wish I could get distracted long enough to forget that America is going down the toilet!
