Last night, my daughter asked what word I was taught that "G" was for.
Remember, in your earliest lessons? A is for Apple?

"What was "G" for," she asked?

I couldn't remember, so I tried a few guesses, "Gate? Grass? Garden? I don't remember... why?"

"Goat." she said. "It's G is for Goat. Why isn't it girl?"

"Is B for Boy?" I asked.

"Yes."

The conversation went on...

I don't know what book she noticed that in yesterday, but I sure am proud of her. :)

1. She's a sharp one.
I, however, was taught that g is for girl. I still remember it:

A is for apple.
B is for boy.
C is for cat.
D is for dog.
E is for egg.
F is for fish.
G is for girl.
H is for hat.

etc.

Times change I guess.

8. I'm sure it's different in most books...
up to the author to decide.

Are people who write alphabet books "authors"? ;)

2. .
Why are you proud of her? I am confused. Is it a striking example of feminism that someone wanted to draw a picture of a goat?

3. For noticing the inexplicable lack of parallelism.
B gets to be for Boy.
G however, is for Goat.

Seriously, you didn't understand the OP's point?

These are things that usually aren't even questioned.

Thanks for your response.

4. I learned B is for Bravo and G is for Golf as a child.
My dad insisted that I learn that NATO phonetic alphabet as a child (I don't know why, maybe he thought I would grow up to be a pilot or something). I don't remember what they taught for any of the letters in school since I still used the NATO phonetics and the teacher did not mind.

15. I learned that in the Army
I kept using it when I was a computer programmer in San Francisco in the '80s had to call in programs to be run from the data center in Sacramento. That's when I started modifying it. For some reason, I substituted hotel with Hector and golf with George; when more than one idiot at the other end of the line thought Sierra was spelled with a "C" (we're in California, remember), I started using Sam.

A sailor was on a single-sideband radio calling home via a phone link trying to have "phone sex" with his wife. He is sitting there at the console and the caption underneath reads "Papa, Alpha, November, Tango, India, Echo, Sierra!! Panties!! I say again Panties!!"

edited for punctuation

The us the NATO alphabet. They have also pick up a lot of military and pilot jargon. It is what they hear.

10. My daughter is 18 now...
but when she was little there were so few books with active female protagonists that, when I read to her, I'd change the gender. The little train that could? A girl. The 3 little pigs and the wolf? All girls. Tigger from the Pooh series? A girl.

saved by the Huntsman. I could never understand the point of Goldilocks. Even as a child. It leaves me with the feeling that a key part of the story got lost through time.

13. ...
No, really, what is so powerful about this moment? Are you saying that the book was marginalizing girls in favor of goats? Does this have something to do with sexuality? Or is it that "B" comes before "G" in the alphabet, which indicates superiority?

18. All kids should use Edward Gorey's Alphabet primer,
The Gashlycrumb Tinies.....

A is for Amy, who fell down the stairs
B is for Basil, assualted by bears

and so on. His G is:

G if for George, smothered under a rug
H is for Hector, done in by a thug...

But in seriousness, great eye from the daughter. Job well done by the Mother I'd say...

Gorey's illustrations of his work are the best part. The Tinies and their alphabet can be found on line as well. The books are amazing however.
