Plus-sized beauty competing for title of Miss England
And she has a shot at the title, as audience vote is factored into the decision and she has become a national favorite.

======

A 17-year-old girl from Surrey has defied the modelling status quo by becoming the first size 16 model to be selected as a finalist for the Miss England competition, and has spoken of how proud she is of her curvy body.

Chloe Marshall, from Guildford, beat seven other, slimmer girls to the title of Miss Surrey and will now compete in the national finals...

"It's really exciting, I'm really, really happy. I'm lost for words, I started to cry and everything. I'm over the moon," she said.

"I wanted to go through to the Miss England finals to break through the stereotype that you have to be tall and skinny.

"I wanted to make a bit of a statement. When I studied the other entrants for the Miss Surrey competition I concluded that pretty as the contestants were, they were equally all uniformly blonde and Barbie-doll-like.

"I want to show girls out there that it is possible to be beautiful and not a standard sized zero.

5. Hell yea I say go for it, but couldn't they find a swim suit that was a little more flattering?

9. The caption says it is "the official" Miss England swimsuit
So I think she had to wear it. She probably is thinking "you want it? Fine, you got it!"

20. Swimsuit does not mean bikini, right?
I think that in the old days, beauty contestants were specifically told to wear a one piece suit, a-la Betty Grable.

25. To me a swimsuit is anything you can wear to swim in bikini or not, but
you gotta admit some of those "old time" suits were more sexy, and flattering.

29. Uhm....by flattering, do you mean, cover up?

The point is to embrace the different size. I doubt you would have made that observation, if she was a size six.

34. Get a freaking grip, by flattering I mean maybe something that fits right,
or is maybe made for a fuller figure, let's face it full figures should be careful about wearing bikinis and no I could care less what size she is. You assume an awful lot.

flatter: to display to advantage (merriam-webster dictionary)

8. She is pretty but
being that much overweight is not healthy either (and she's only 17).

10. and you can tell from looking that her blood pressure is high? how about her
triglycerides? how much weight can she lift? can she walk a mile in 15 minutes?

of course, no one can possibly be fit at all if they appear to be overweight. it is entirely possible to be overweight and still be fit.

you have no idea if she is healthy or not.

13. You're absolutely right --
I have no idea if she's healthy or not. She's only 17 - she has youth on her side.
But generally, carrying that much weight around one's middle is unhealthy, that's all.

26. There is another thread that disputes the "fit and fat" claim.
At age 17, she is likely "fit", but her eating/exercise habits will accumulate negatively over time if she is already this large.

Again, exceptions allowed for meds or medical issues, but if she is as healthy as she looks (skin, hair...), she may benefit from carrying less weight.

30. You're assuming she won't stay the size she is now.
At 17 I weighed 150 lbs. At 44, I weigh 150 lbs. My entire adult life, I've been in the 150 to 155 range. If I get under that, my body seeks this range. If I go over, my body flexes back to this range. I'm healthy - no diabetes, no joint problems, and other than sinuses, no medical issues. I exercise, I eat relatively healthy. Compared to a lot of 'thin' people my age, I'm in damn good shape. And, I haven't had to struggle to avoid the added 'pound per year' I hear so much about. (And, yes, I'm a female.) So, don't assume that because she's that size now that she'll automatically have a 'negative accumulation' from her eating/exercise habits.

As for benefiting from carrying less weight, I don't know. The lousiest I ever felt was when I was at, 140 pounds. Every time I turned around, I was getting sick. For me, it wasn't worth it. I'm healthier at 150.

All I'm saying, is this could be her body's ideal comfort weight.

40. If it is, she is the exception and not the rule.
Same for you.

I am not sure what "damn good shape" means, I am not sure of your height, I am not sure of your muscle mass, I am not sure of your running ability, so I am not sure how you are an example for others. Health is good, so, if you are healthy, good!

23. Actually, some people can be overweight and healthy.
I know people are getting fatter and it's not good for them (diabetes, joint problems, increased risk for stroke, etc.), but some people are just heavier- they're made that way. If we see someone who is 5'5'', we don't say 'what's wrong with this person, why aren't they 6'?' We can see that for the vertical, but for the horizontal, somehow everyone is supposed to be the same. You can sometimes tell, because the naturally heavy person has a body that 'fits' them, for lack of a better description. Truly overweight people have bodies that look somehow stressed.

Anyway, people who are sedentary are at greater risk of health problems, regardless of weight.

Given the majority of women are 5'4 and 155 pounds, we need beauty images that represent ALL types of beauty.

I was skin and bones, and literally could not fit into any smaller size because my pelvis is wide and my bones big. I've never met someone I knew who wore a size 0.

She's quite lovely, imo.

Could she look better if she lost some weight? Sure. But she's actually quite pretty just the way she is. She's not obese.
