Sex-Abuse Teacher Bill Moves On

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- The state House approved a bill designed to weed out sexually and physically abusive teachers by creating statewide standards for hiring, screening and reporting misconduct.

If signed into law, the bill would bring uniformity to widely differing local standards and prohibit school districts from entering confidentiality agreements with teachers who get in trouble.

The Senate previously passed the bill, but it will go back there because the House amended it to include a provision that would deny state pensions to any public employees or officials, not just teachers, convicted of sex crimes against minors.

The House voted 118-0 for the bill (SB 1712). If the Senate agrees with the changes, it will go to the governor.
