How I Spent My Summer Gas Holiday

Summer holiday . . . ahhhh, sounds so nice and relaxing. Makes you think of breezy vacations and swaying palm trees. Glittering white sand and crystal blue water. Frosty, fruity drinks with delicate pastel umbrellas.

Summer �gas tax� holiday, however, has a decidedly different connotation. That invokes images of rice shortages and $4.00 a gallon milk. Of angry looking foreclosure signs, abandoned homes, and long lines at the pump. Of paying your electric bill with change from a mason jar.

The irony is the people enjoying the summer holiday of the palm-tree variety are sipping their refreshing beverages at the expense of those praying for that gas tax holiday. Your friends and neighbors who spend anxious mornings scanning the want-ads for some kind of employment, hoping they can find a job with health insurance, something close to home because they can�t afford $65 fill-ups and long commutes. Wondering how they�re going to pay for Billy�s summer camp this year make thoughts of a real holiday vacation a wistful impossibility.

McCain, Clinton, and Obama today are working on their own proposals for a summer gas-tax holiday. A few weeks ago Congress heard testimony from the executives of the five biggest oil companies�Exxon Mobil, Royal Dutch Shell, BP, ConocoPhilips and Chevron. Lawmakers asked them how they could justify $18 billion in tax breaks last year while showing record profits of $123 billion (yes, BILLION) and investing next to nothing on renewable sources of energy. During that hearing Rep. Emmanuel Cleaver (D/MO) asked Stephen Simon, Senior Vice President of Exxon Mobile, how he justified the $400 million (yes, MILLION) severance package for Exxon�s former CEO Lee Raymond. Here�s an excerpt:

REP. EMANUEL CLEAVER: My father worked all of his life. He never earned more than $25,000 a year. And there were years that he worked�actually worked three jobs, most of the time just two, sent four children to college. He�s eighty-six years old. There will be people like my father all over the country, and I�ll have some of them at a meeting next Saturday when I do my monthly coffee with the congressman. Mr. Simon, what can I say to them to help them understand how Lee Raymond received a $400 million severance package from Exxon Mobil, which translates into $141,000 a day? What do I say next Saturday to the people who come to my meeting who are struggling to get to work now because they can�t afford to put gasoline in their car? Can you help me get them to understand how it�s OK for Mr. Raymond to get a $400 million package, and they struggle, and the oil company profits at an all-time high?

STEPHEN SIMON: I would hope that would be behind us by now, Congressman, but I would just�

REP. EMANUEL CLEAVER: Why?

STEPHEN SIMON: Because that is in the past.

Because it�s in the past, Simon says. Like our former high-paying American manufacturing jobs, also in the past. Like well-paved roads, working levies, functioning infrastructure, that�s way back there in the past as well. Like the money in your retirement fund or stock portfolio � that�s history, along with the balance in your savings account. Like a livable minimum wage � that�s gone with the wind. Vanished like the record-setting government surplus Clinton left to Bush and his warhawk/chickenhawk cabal, which invest it in global death, destruction, and domination instead of in the American people.

Oil companies are ripping off taxpayers? Again? Pshaw, it�s in the past. As Dim Son would say: �history so far back it�s like it doesn't count.� And Chucklenutz yesterday warned about rich farmers hurting the American people with their scary subsidies. Wealthy farmers, yup � that�s the problem with the economy.

But never fear, Raisin Brain has solved the problem, waving his proverbial magic wand and dispensing like pixie dust wondrous $600 rebates to many working-class families. Gee, what to do with that windfall? Maybe pay a fraction of our ballooning sub-prime mortgage payment, which has doubled this year? Or perhaps pay a portion of the past-due hospital bill that�s in collections and has ruined our credit rating because we don�t have health insurance. Or throw all caution to the wind and fill up the car a couple of times, buy a week�s groceries, then treat the family to a DVD rental at Blockbuster. (Hint: I recommend the 2005 version of �Fun with Dick and Jane.� Inspiring.)

So how will the current crop of hopefuls hash out their differences on a possible summer gas tax holiday? And what does it matter as long as the Bush Crime Family remains in power throughout the summer. Holiday? You leetle peeple don� get no steenkin� holiday. The only holiday Bunnypants is focused on is his own upcoming vacation: another useless, taxpayer-funded hand-holding, kissy-face junket to Saudi Arabia. He�ll kiss the king, and probably the ring, then beg them to open the spigots, only to have a well-manicured finger waved in his face . .. �No, n,o no, Mr. President, this is an American problem of your own making due to your gross mismanagement of the entire economy, No more gas for you,� you can imagine King Saud gently chiding over his perfectly square, jet-black soul patch. �Well darn it, you're probably right on there, King,� Georgie might reply, �pass me that platter of dates, would ya�? And could I have a refill on my drink, here? Maybe a fresh little umbrella? Yellow one this time, if ya� got it . . . . not too much ice . . . �
