Senator Byrd speaks on the Senate floor again.
"Five years ago, I took issue with the president's choreographed political theatrics because I believed that our military forces deserved to be treated with respect and dignity, and not used as stage props to embellish a presidential speech," Byrd said....

"The president's declaration of 'mission accomplished' and the 'end of major combat operations' proved wildly premature and dangerously naïve," Byrd said Wednesday. "Our nation continues to pay the price every single day. More than 97 percent of the more than 4,000 Americans killed in Iraq lost their lives after the president's flashy declaration of victory."....

Byrd said he expects history books published in future years will feature the "Mission Accomplished" speech "as the epitome of this administration's reckless and arrogant foreign policy....

"We have seen a president who is eager to use American troops for a political backdrop, yet is seemingly indifferent when it comes to providing them with the equipment they need, quality health care, or a real plan for ending the war."

8. I don't know all the details, but I've heard about his connection
to the KKK and it sounds very bad. If I had to guess I'd say that was at least 50 years ago, but I'm not sure. I'd also guess that most of those Klan members stayed racist for the rest of their lives. Even though it's very rare, I do believe it's possible for people like that to change, and I believe Sen. Byrd is one of them. My knowledge of him is limited, reading and hearing the news mostly, but based on that I believe he's a good man and I'm glad he's in the Senate.

I've heard his name mentioned on the news since forever, but didn't become familiar with him until these last 8 years or so. Since then I've seen him make 3 or 4 speeches from the Senate Floor and I thought he was inspiring. What he said was the real truth, and he spoke it plainly. That speech he gave just prior to invading Iraq was absolutely one for the ages. It's a crying shame we have so few like that in the government. The government we have now HAS to be one of the worst in our history. Wackos, self-serving tools, and moral cowards are what we have for the most part. We can thank you West Virginians we have Sen. Byrd.
