Have watched most of 'em since Northern Dancer blew me away when I was 12 in 1964. Second biggest thing to the Beatles in May of that year.

"And DOWN the stretch they come. . . " Been great ones since then (Seattle Slew, Affirmed, Barbaro, etc.), but there is just one whose greatness is so overwhelming it almost brings tears to my eyes:

1. This will be the first one I've missed since I was in the service.
Do you think there might be a streaming link?

R.I.P., Barbaro.

2. Northern Dancer was magnificent and I remember him very well.
One of my first "loves "was Kelso, who missed the triple crown in 1960 but later went on to be in his time, the highest winning race horse. He was a gelding and didn't stop racing to become a stud. I even wrote to him! Ok...I was 9 at the time. :)

I did cheat Kelly though and also fell for Carry Back, who won the Derby and Preakness in 1961. He then went on to win best 3 year old and also won many major stake races.

7. If he was a Gelding....
There wouldn't be much point to stop racing to be come a stud.

Geldings rarely make good stud horses.

If ever.

3. I'll be out in the barn
with the vet; he's coming to do all the spring vaccinations.

No wonder I was able to get him at the last minute on a Saturday, lol. Everyone else is inside watching the race.

I didn't stop to check what time the race would be when I made the appointment.

They aren't getting teeth floated today, so if the vet is on time, I might make it back to the house in good time. Or not.

4. Cool!!!
I remember well when Ruffian broke down in the "Battle of the Sexes" race.

She was NEVER headed, NEVER beaten, in ten races.

No male horse has ever done that.

I cried for a week after she was put down, and I had never ridden a horse in my life until a couple of years ago.

5. We were all with you about Ruffian. And then Barbaro a couple years ago.
Never used to even think of such a thing. What a couple of great horses.

This year, I hope it's the way it's supposed to be - great excitement, nobody hurt.

16. R.I.P., Eight Belles, R.I.P., Ruffian
So sad.

Secretariat's trainer said (of Ruffian), "As God is my witness, she may be even better than Secretariat". (taken from Wikipedia)
