Speaker: Kansas governor wooed lawmakers with basketball

TOPEKA | House Speaker Melvin Neufeld (a Republican) is accusing Gov. Kathleen Sebelius (a Democrat) of using flights on her state plane to NCAA basketball tournament games to persuade legislators to oppose two coal-fired power plants in southwest Kansas.

Five senators and six House members flew in March and April on Sebelius' plane to tournament games involving the University of Kansas men's team, the eventual national champions, The Topeka Capital-Journal reported Saturday. Those games included Final Four contests in San Antonio.

A top Sebelius aide called the allegation "a reach," and one lawmaker described it as "crazy." Two of the legislators have consistently supported the plants, and none has switched a vote.

But the fight over the plants is intense, and Neufeld and other supporters of them argue that Sebelius is making every effort to ensure that her administration can continue blocking their construction.
