Watched the movie "Idocracy" last night. I couldn't help thinking that its version of 2505 is where
the country is headed if the right wing keeps getting elected. No civil rights and total dominance by corporations. It is a great satire and I encourage everybody to watch it.

1. That whole movie was hit way too close to home
We have already seen a dumbing down in this Country. That's how we ended up with 8 years of george Bush

2. "dumbing down". LOL
That is a very good analogy nomad. Wish I had thought of that one myself.

3. Love that movie.
The sad thing is that it's so funny that it's true. The smart people have to think about adding to the population, while the stupid people multiply like bunny rabbits.

4. Fox is thought to have intentionally killed its release
From Wikipedia's entry on the movie:

"As of February 2005 the film's scheduled release date was August 5, 2005, according to Mike Judge. In April 2006, a release date was set for September 1, 2006. In August, numerous articles revealed that release was to be put on hold indefinitely. Idiocracy was released as scheduled but only in seven cities (Los Angeles, Atlanta, Toronto, Chicago, Dallas, Houston and Mike Judge's hometown, Austin), and expanded to only 125 theaters, not the usual wide release of 2500-3000 theaters. According to the Austin American-Statesman, 20th Century Fox, the film's distributor, did nothing to promote the movie — while posters were released to theatres, no movie trailers, television ads, or press kits for media outlets were provided. The film was not screened for critics.<8> Lack of concrete information from 20th Century Fox led to speculation that Fox may have actively tried to keep the film from being seen by a large audience, while fulfilling a contractual obligation for theatrical release ahead of a DVD release, according to Ryan Pearson of AP. In the New York Times Dan Mitchell argued that Fox might be shying away from a cautionary tale about low-intelligence dysgenics. John Patterson of The Guardian suggests it is a result of the film's anti-corporate message, noting that in the film ... the fictional Brawndo corporation buys the F.D.A. and the F.C.C, and the Fox News Channel is depicted in unflattering newscasts (20th Century Fox, which distributed the film, and the Fox News Channel are both owned by the Rupert Murdoch-controlled News Corporation)."

21. Can you blame them
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yz6diQoWQww

I wonder what happened to the Asians or Europeans in that movie. I would assume the Asians probably would've got into their spaceships and traveled to another solar system sometime in the 22nd century.

7. It is a great film and a tribute to the genius of Mike Judge
Beyond the superficial "stupid is as stupid does" comedy, it is a great study in how advertising easily supplants education wherever there happens to be a knowledge vacuum.

Gotta go. It's time for "OW! My Balls!"

10. Most people I've talked to report that they don't know whether to laugh or cry...
when watching this movie.

I laughed my keister off through the whole thing, but I also felt kind of sick. I believe it accurately portrays America in 15 years, not 500.

12. Yes, you get torn feelings during the movie
Granted, I was laughing throughout the movie. However, I found myself at times feeling very, very worried about the future because it seemed to hit too close to home.

11. That is one of my favorites
and a serious wake up call.

I love how everyone was named after a corporation, wear disposable clothing with corporations printed all over them...Gatorade had a deal with the government so they used it to water all the crops until nothing would grow...President Camacho is slightly more intelligent than Bush...this is where we are headed if we don't do something fast...

At least he recognized that his country had problems and wanted to fix them.

The first five minutes of that is so true... the different birthrate of the Yups vs. the Rednecks.....

Of course, this makes us elitists.

I guess so.

I can live with that.

you talk like a fag, and yer shit's all retarded..." Dr Lexus, offering a diagnosis.

The government officials all had their position on the sleeves of their shirts; I thought that was pretty cool.

19. Loved it!
Watched it last year and couldn't understand why it wasn't bigger. Actually, the movie itself explains why it wasn't bigger. There's a scene where the main character wanders into a movie theater where people are laughing at a guy's butt on screen for an hour and a half farting. In the same way that the Twilight Zone used far-fetched scenarios to talk about the present in a way that the audience of the time wouldn't instantly find objectionable, 'Idiocracy' does the same thing. It isn't really talking about a future 200 years or 50 or 10 into the future, it uses that to talk about now.

The only real failing was the leads. Luke Wilson was okay, but someone like Matthew Broderick could have turned it into a classic. Maya Rudolph likewise was fine, but there are better, like a wonderful comedic character actor Rebecca Corry (but she's kind of short, so it may be a distraction).

22. I keep telling people to see this movie...
Saw it last year on DVD at my sister's house. My teen-aged niece was especially affected--she got it all and then some. It made her very quiet (unusual for her).

When the movie finished, a cable channel popped on showing The World's Strongest Man Truck Pull...for a few seconds everyone thought we were still watching the DVD...now that was surreal.

If you've never seen the World's Strongest Man Truck Pull, go here. This is what we saw immediately after having our minds blown by Idiocracy:
