Here in Tucson it's about 400 - infinity with the rim. Now of course you can buy used tires but I've always been uncomfortable with the practice. Keep in mind that unless you want to replace all 4 tires you will likely have to go to the dealership to get a matching rim for the rest of your car.

1. rim, I would get one at a wrecking yard
probably around $50. Tire and mount and balance, probably about $135-$165, maybe as much as $230, depending on tire size and quality.
But , if you had to get a rim at a dealership, total cost could be as high $4oo, so you're about right.

2. Wheels are expensive. 400 for allow wheel and decent tire isn't bad.

4. wrecking yard is the place to go
for your rims. $50 is about right. You can shop around and find tires for well under $400--around here, that would be what a whole set would cost.

5. Much more than the money saved by suspending the gas tax
no gas tax = more pot holes = tire damage = money.

6. I only drive real oldie cars
A 1973 Saab, a 1969 Citroen, and a 1957 DKW. They all accomodate VW bug tires which are fairly cheap, as low as $35 for a new tire. The rims would be very hard to find, especially for the DKW.

1969 DS 21:

But I have my sights on a used 2CV Truckette in running condition at a junk yard. It's the same car you see in the movie "Les Diaboligues" in which the two women carried the murdered husband's body. They get about 55 miles per gallon.

8. Sounds about normal.
Rims cost a lot. If you're looking right now, you might want to see if you can get a better deal from a mail order place than from the dealer.

10. I'm not
Really I was just trying to make a point about the gas tax thing. It's a Republican strategy to avoid talking about what we lose when we cut a strapped budget.

12. Just did this last week in T.N.
Stock steel rim for Jeep Cherokee $35 (Aluminum was about $80). I was able to reuse the tire, but I could get a generic (Chinese) one for about $60

14. How high is up? Tires and rims range from $35 to $500+. You need to be specific.
