AP survey finds that voter registration is way up

By the Associated Press

UPDATED 4:30 PM DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — Voter excitement, always up before a presidential election, is pushing registration through the roof so far this year — with more than 3.5 million people rushing to join in the historic balloting, according to an Associated Press survey that offers the first national snapshot.

Figures are up for blacks, women and young people. Rural and city. South and North.

Overall, the AP found that more than one in 66 adult Americans signed up to vote in just the first three months of the year. And in the 20 states that were able to provide comparable data, new registrations have soared about 65 percent from the same three months in the 2004 campaign.

Voters are flocking to the most open election in half a century, inspired to support the first female president, the first black or the oldest ever elected.

1. It's been like this all over the country.
We came out for Kerry in droves, too. This year is like 2004 on steroids.

They're going to hafta work REALLY hard to steal it this time.

2. That makes polls less accurate
because so many new people are voting.

3. Just because more people register doesn't mean they will vote.
There are too many that register but don't vote.

We have been fielding calls from election workers that were asking today if they could vote absentee since they were working at a site away from their precinct.

We have been fielding calls from people that don't know if they are registered to vote.

We have been fielding calls from so called Republicans wondering if they can vote in the Democratic primary. And explain to them that one is not registered as a Republican or Democrat in Indiana.

And just because those that might decide to vote for the first time in the primary doesn't mean they will in the general.
