7-Year-Old Steals SUV, Goes On Joyride

Latarian Milton is not your typical 7-year-old. Few his age have ever driven an SUV up and down several busy streets. It all started at his mother's townhouse.

Along the way, he ran over two mailboxes, hit two park cars in a Costco parking lot and struck two moving cars near a Wal-Mart.

"I wanted to do it because it's fun, fun to do bad things, to drive into a car," Latarian said. "I wanted to do hood rat stuff with my friend."

I see it every day in the two inner city schools I've worked in. Here are some real parent quotes, slightly edited for understandable grammar and context:

"My son got suspended for fighting? But the other kid took his cookie! I teach my son to fight when that stuff happens! I'm gonna go beat up that kid right now!!" (parent runs out, security stops her about 6 feet away from the 1st grader she was about to beat up)

"He throws stuff at the teacher because that what he does!! It's your job to live with that!!" (mother of 8th grader)

"She got sent to the vice-principal just for saying 'fuck you' to the teacher!?!? Are you serious?? The teacher shouldn't have made her do her work!" (mother of 2nd grader)

"My son's in a gang, just like his dad! He should be writing "Blood in, Blood out" on everything! B's up!" (Mother of 7th grader)

"Why did she get an "F"? She doesn't feel like coming to school so she stays with her 21 year old boyfriend" (13 year old student)

I guarantee Latarian's mom will be defending his actions for the rest of his life.
