UNITED STATES ATTORNEY FOR THE NORTHERN DISTRICT OF FLORIDA ANNOUNCES RESIGNATION


TALLAHASSEE - United States Attorney Gregory Miller, 54, announced today that after 26 years of public service he has submitted his resignation to President Bush, and will retire from the federal government effective midnight June 30, 2008.

Mr. Miller has accepted a partnership with the Pensacola firm of Beggs and Lane, and on July 1, 2008, will open the firm’s first branch office in Tallahassee.

“It has been an honor to serve the nation and the citizens of the Northern District of Florida as their United States Attorney for these past six years. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for Northern Florida is routinely recognized as one of the finest U.S. Attorney’s Offices in the nation. I am most grateful to the dedicated and hard working professionals on my staff who have made this, quite simply, the best job I have ever had. I consider myself blessed to have served with such outstanding public servants. The accomplishments of this district, and its staff, are a source of pride that I will carry with me for long after the ink fades on my letter of appointment. I greatly appreciate the expression of confidence that President Bush gave me in my appointment as United States Attorney. I also want to thank Governor Charlie Crist, Former Governor Jeb Bush, Senators Mel Martinez, Bill Nelson and Bob Graham, and U.S. Attorney Generals Ashcroft, Gonzales, and Muskasey for their support of my service as United States Attorney, and their confidence in me.”

Mr. Miller was nominated on May 6, 2002, by President George W. Bush to be the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Florida. He was confirmed by the United States Senate on July 26, 2002.

He previously served as First Assistant and Chief of the Criminal Division of the Northern District of Florida, as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Northern and Middle Districts of Florida, as an Assistant State Attorney in the 6th Judicial Circuit of the State of Florida, and as a Judge Advocate for the United States Marine Corps. Mr. Miller began his career in public service in 1978 as an Officer Candidate with the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. He is one of only 30 remaining original appointees in the first class of post 9/11 United States Attorneys.

Mr. Miller oversees 34 attorneys in Gainesville, Tallahassee, and Pensacola. During the past six years, Mr. Miller and his office played a prominent role in fighting crime and terrorism in Northern Florida and elsewhere. He placed a special priority on the investigation and prosecution of child exploitation offenses, civil rights violations, white collar crime, organized crime, and drug trafficking.

Mr. Miller has served on numerous task forces, boards, and committees, including the Attorney General Advisory Committee’s Terrorism & National Security Subcommittee, Security Working Group, CyberCrime and Intellectual Property Subcommittee, and Office Management and Budget Subcommittee.

In addition to other recognitions received while in office, in 2006 Mr. Miller was honored with the Executive Office for United States Attorneys Director’s Award for Superior Performance in Public Service, and in 2007 he was awarded the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation Chief’s Award, the highest award presented by the Criminal Investigative Division of the Internal Revenue Service.
