Israel says Iran will have nuclear bomb within a year
http://feeds.bignewsnetwork.com/?sid=356560

Israel says Iran will be in a position to begin enriching uranium on a military scale this year.

According to The Jerusalem Post, the new assessment moves up Israel's forecasts on Tehran's nuclear program by almost a full year - from 2009 to the end of 2008. According to the new timeline, Iran could have a nuclear weapon by the middle of next year.

The Post, in an execlusive, quoted a senior Iranian defense official as saying the Islamic Republic was now on track to master the technology needed to enrich uranium within six months.

Israel, says The Jerusalem Post report, is also concerned that Tehran is developing a cruise missile that can evade interception by the Arrow, the Israeli army's anti-ballistic missile defense system. Iran is suspected of having smuggled Ukrainian X-55 cruise missiles and using them as models for an independent, domestic project. A cruise missile, which flies at low altitudes to dodge radar detection and interception, could be used to carry a nuclear warhead, The Post report said.

2. Headline is a nasty piece of misleading fearmongering
The very first sentence of the article actually says: "Israel says Iran will be in a position to begin enriching uranium on a military scale this year."

Yeah, and I will be in a position to begin firing my gun indiscriminately into crowds this year. But WILL I?

6. Our NIE on Iran stated they were no longer pursuing
nuclear weapons. If Israel had its way they'd have our troops bombing or occupying every country in the middle east.

8. The most any 'real' expert is saying is that they could have enough
fisable material for a bomb within one year... Making a bomb is more complicated. That's closer to 5 years away.

Don't believe the hype.

11. Realistic scenario for the next President
My father (retired Marine Corps. officer) told me about what he foresees as an interesting scenario for a future US President regarding Israel and Iran. Israel follows a pre-emptive war foreign policy. However, Iran's nuclear facilities are deep underground covered with concrete. Israel doesn't have conventional weapons strong enough to penetrate the concrete and destroy these facilities. Key word: conventional. Israel would need to use a nuclear weapon to destroy Iran's underground nuclear facilities. The US has B2 bombers which are capable of carrying much larger bunker-busting type conventional bombs that Israel cannot deploy with its F-16s. So two options are foreseeable in terms of how Israel will deal with Iran's nuclear ambitions:

1. Israel uses a low-yield nuclear bomb to destroy Iran's nuclear facilities.
2. The US, which has stronger conventional weapons, destroys Iran's nuclear facility to appease Israel and to keep them from launching a low-yield nuclear strike against Iran.

Obviously, neither option is desirable. I think it's something to keep in mind though before we completely tie ourselves with Israel's pre-emptive war philosophy. This article makes it sound like Israel will put the US in the aforementioned scenario within the next year. It's time to start talking with the Iranians before we reach this point of no return.

17. Option 3
Sell Irsael a B-2 bomber and some bunker-busters and tell them to go to it

Option 4
Wake Israel up to the fact that Joe Stalin had nuclear weapons, and didn't use them for fear of being turned into molten slag; Iran probably won't either.

15. Israel worrying about other nations having nuclear power is ironic.
If Israel, China, India, Pakistan, the US, the UK, France, and Russia can have nuclear, maybe the hyperbole regarding Iran is a bit misplaced. It's not kosker to say, but the simple factual record suggests the most likely countries to use nuclear are the US and Israel.

This story simply means the Likudniks are attempting to generate some stories to insinuate into the election Iran fear.

Our oil wars drive our deficit spending and redirect funds that would and should go to US infrastructure, but for the wars. The deficit spending indebts us to our "dealers," China and Japan. Global corporations get fat as war, excess reliance on debt, and oil demand increase.

But everyone should fear those pesky Iranians and their nuclear ambitions. Our inability to see the world as it is, and to see it in the caricature created in our media, is difficult to fathom. It's an imaginary world, where the real threats to world peace are the ones who howl the loudest about being secure.
