GOP voters still dissing McCain
:nopity:

Some still dissing McCain at polls
By JONATHAN MARTIN | 5/9/08 4:29 AM EST

It's hard not to notice: In each of the past three Republican primaries, roughly a quarter of the vote went to someone other than John McCain.

Ron Paul and Mike Huckabee got a combined 27 percent of the vote in Pennsylvania last month, long after the GOP nomination had been settled in McCain's favor. On Tuesday, Paul, Huckabee and Mitt Romney received a combined 23 percent in Indiana. Alan Keyes, Huckabee, Paul and "no preference" took 26 percent in North Carolina.

On the surface, it would seem that McCain, the party's presumptive nominee, still has some distance to go in winning over his party. But aides to McCain and other observers say the results are less than meets the eye.

They argue that the lingering votes for Paul and Huckabee — who together won about one-fifth of the vote in Indiana and North Carolina — represent vestigial passion for two candidates who developed a fervent, if narrow, grass-roots following.

Still, for a candidate viewed with suspicion by some in his party’s base, the dissenting votes are a nuisance he could do without.

1. McLame doesn't have the endorsement of the RW Radio Hatemongers.

It's the shittoheads that are so vocally against McLame. They are just doing what is expected of them. Their shepherds make a suggestion and it is as much as a command to them. They will probably relent as the GE gets nearer.

2. I wouldn't count too much on this come November

Although there are more than a few Repubs who can't quite stomach McCain at the moment, as summer turns to fall and they're staring into the (for them) abyss of 8 years of Obama or Clinton as president, JM will start to look a heck of a lot better. From our side, we can only hope that once a Democratic nominee is decided, those who supported other candidates will put whatever animosities were generated during the primaries aside and realize that any Democrat will be infinitely better for the country and the world than McCain. The election may very well hinge on which party can come together that way.

3. Please, can someone explain to me
what the hell the GOP was thinking? I mean, McCain was TRAILING FAR BEHIND all these other dudes and I was preparing myself for a Huckabee nomination. What the heck happened? Republican ship sinking and they realized no one can revive it this time around...?

5. Remember 2 yrs ago - Bill Frist was a shoo-in.
Then: no problem - Jeb would be the heir apparent.
Now it appears the pubs have followed tradition and passed the mantle to the elder statesman of the party (a la Dole in 96).

The republicans have just 'lost their bearings.' - hee hee
