Jan. 2009: Alternative visions

If Obama is elected (which is most likely), then 100 years from now, historians will look at that as the time when the 21st century really started for America. It will be seen as the time when we faced up to the challenges of the new century and chose a bold, new path that led to new kinds of greatness for the USA.

In the unlikely event that McCain is elected, Jan. 2009 won't be remembered much. Historians will, instead, concentrate on the Bush Administration as the one that led us down the path we are on now. They will say that Jan. 2001 was the beginning of the end of the reign of the U.S. as a superpower. McCain will be remembered as a lackluster president who did not alter course, when needed. His continuation of Bush policies during his one and only term will be seen as a missed opportunity.

1. If McCain wins.. 100 years from now

America will be remembered as a fond, near mythical place. A place where ordinary people were protected from the powerful by laws that all had to at least pretend to respect. It will be like Camelot, or Brigadoon.
