Cantelope $3.89 a piece? Fuck, we'll be carrying sacks on a stick and begging at the back doors of
the "haves" pretty soon!

A crappy bagel costs $.69 and a crappier muffin is $1.49 at the supermarket. A 16 oz can of soup is $2.19...for broth and a few pieces of pasta. Brown rice is $1.79 lb and bread and milk are near $4.00. Why are we not taking to the streets with this? I despise this administration. DESPISE them. I hope they pay in hell.

It will probably even crop up in this thread eventually.

They usually start out with something innocuous like, "Beans and lentils are both cheap and nutritious! Why don't you just eat that every day of the week?" and then get progressively nastier and more blaming when they are argued with.

Just wait. You'll see it.

(I'm neither poor or one of the people who have personally experienced this on DU, BTW. I've just seen it in a number of threads in the past.)

If I'm poor and I'm trying to be smart by "stocking up" on fresh corn on sale, how should I keep it so it lasts me the rest of the month??? This is the quandary with fresh produce...

And I haven't been able to use a single coupon for just about anything other than non-food household items since we started cooking using whole foods rather than processed stuff. They don't print coupons for strawberries or salmon or asparagus. They only print coupons for oreos and boxed mac & cheese and Stove Top and crap like that.

(Not complaining here - I can afford to buy 3.89 cantaloupe even though I don't like it. I just don't think that this is a reasonable suggestion for people who are struggling when the topic du jour is produce.)

80. yeah, I don't get that coupon-clipping stuff
and how people say they save so much money that way.

It's mostly for junk food or overly-processed stuff. The household cleaners are still more expensive, even with the coupon, than the house brand. It only works if you're attached to a specific brand- like shampoo, for example.

87. I never see coupons for broccoli
or other fresh fruits and vegetables. I read about people who hit the groceries with stacks of coupons and supposedly end up paying $1.95 for a cartload of groceries, but every time I get coupons they're for things I don't buy in the first place.

One store I frequent does have a marked-down meats locker that I do check, and I will buy one type of vegetable over another if it's on sale, but unless you have a large freezer or like canning they're not the kind of things to stock up on. There's a chain in the area catering to the Asian population that has good prices on vegetables, but they're sold packaged in large quantities that are too big to use before they go bad, although Mr. Retrograde did make kim chee with the remains of the huge bag of bok choy.

14. a friend of mine was visiting canada and she said a head of lettuce is $5 there.....
....is that true? who the hell would pay $5 for a head of lettuce?

food prices have gone up down here in costa rica too. but i don't pay more than 20 or 30 cents for a head of romaine lettuce. and i can still get hass avocadoes for 40 or 50 cents each (they used to be about 20 cents each) and there's no ration on rice. of course we make less money than you folks in the states, but still at least we can afford produce.

i don't know what i'd do if i were still living in the states. i do know that i'm going to start a huge organic garden on one of my properties down here. i'm already growing citrus, bananas, mangoes, avocadoes and stuff like that. i've got a mountain of compost cooking as we speak and as soon as it's ready i'm putting in a giant raised bed garden for tomatoes, peppers, lettuce and other stuff. even though it's still affordable here, i'm concerned about pesticide use, herbicide use and general soil quality where the farming is done.

You're paying for transportation from Mexico, California, Central and South America. Granted, the other things mentioned are entirely too expensive, but you could save a lot cash by buying "in-season" fruits and vegetables - then buy your rice, flour, etc... in bulk and share the cost with other friends/families.

In the shadow of corruption. I recognize that oil prices have caused production costs to rise. But I also think that the blatant and seemingly carefree corruption that grips our country has some people/corporations thinking that they are going to get theirs now too. The economy is now a free-for-all cluster fuck.

This year, a fellow canvased our neighborhood, asking for financial help. Money I can't give, but he got a handout from my freezer, for supper, and advice on where he and his family can volunteer to get help with weekly groceries.

People are hungry as hell in this "land of plenty" and it will take more than a mere change in administrations to fix that!

37. are the freeptards feeling the same crunch? and what are they saying?
i gotta believe the average freeper earns a lot less than the average DUer. DUers tend to be much more intelligent and resourceful and so i assume have more economic opportunities. yes, i realize we have people here at DU that are struggling horribly right now, but we're so diverse and we have so many hi tech professionals and other white collar people here that the average salary is probably very respectable.

freeptards on the other hand seem to be less intelligent, less educated, and less likely to hold down a high paying job.

i have to believe freeptards are getting their asses kicked by the food price crisis much more than DUers. how are they justifying the huge oil company profits that are costing them so much for fuel and food?

I know a great many of them, and they hold down the same sorts of jobs for the same kind of pay as my dyed-in-the-wool
liberal friends. I've noticed that Republicans are more likely to blame the entire system for higher prices, when they complain
at all. I have heard one claim that it's Bill Clinton's fault, but when challenged, he went and hid.

I've noticed that the best way to smoke out a Republican is to ask them what they think of the weak dollar...those who
say it's a net good are Republicans, without fail.

ps - my most conservative "friend" (sparring partner) drives a Prius, whereas two of my most liberal friends drive a Yukon and a

Edited on Mon May-12-08 10:39 PM by proud patriot
(everything below these words are from a RW email sent to me ..Not My Words proud patriot)

-----This email comes in three parts: Read them all...

Part 1

In just one year. Remember the election in 2006?
Thought you might like to read the following:

A little over one year ago:
1) Consumer confidence stood at a 2 1/2 year high;
2) Regular gasoline sold for $2.19 a gallon;
3) The unemployment rate was 4.5%.

Since voting in a Democratic Congress in 2006 we have seen:
1) Consumer confidence plummet;
2) The cost of regular gasoline soar to over $3.50 a gallon;
3) Unemployment is up to 5% (a 10% increase);
4) American households have seen $2.3 trillion in equity value evaporate (stock and mutual fund losses);
5) Americans have seen their home equity drop by $1.2 trillion dollars;
6) 1% of American homes are in foreclosure.

America voted for change in 2006, and we got it!

Remember it's Congress that makes law not the President.

He has to work with what's handed to him.

Part 2:

Taxes...Whether Democrat or a Republican you will find these statistics enlightening and amazing.
www.taxfoundation.org/publications/show/151.html

Taxes under Clinton 1999 Taxes under Bush 2008
Single making 30K - tax $8,400 Single making 30K - tax $4,500
Single making 50K - tax $14,000 Single m aking 50K - tax $12,500
Single making 75K - tax $23,250 Single making 75K - tax $18,750
Married making 60K - tax $16,800 Married making 60K- tax $9,000
Married making 75K - tax $21,000 Married making 75K - tax $18,750
Married making 125K - tax $38,750 Married making 125K - tax $31,250

Both democratic candidates will return to the higher tax rates

It is amazing how many people that fall into the categories above think Bush is screwing them and Bill Clinton was the greatest President ever. If Obama or Hillary are elected, they both say they will repeal the Bush tax cuts and a good portion of the people that fall into the categories above can't wait for it to happen. This is like the movie The Sting with Paul Newman; you scam somebody out of some money and they don't even know what happened.

PART 3:

You think the war in Iraq is costing us too much?

Read this:
Boy am I confused. I have been hammered with the propaganda that it
is the Iraq war ($52B / Yr) and the war on terror ($40B / Yr) that is bankrupting us.

I now find that to be RIDICULOUS.

I hope the following 14 reasons are forwarded over and over again
until they are read so many times that the reader gets sick of reading them. I
have included the URL's for verification of all the following facts.

1. $11 Billion to $22 billion is spent on welfare to illegal aliens
each year by state governments.

Verify at:

2. $2.2 Billion dollars a year is spent on food assistance programs
such as food stamps, WIC, and free school lunches for illegal aliens.

Verify at:

3. $2.5 Billion dollars a year is spent on Medicaid for illegal aliens.
Verify at:

4. $12 Billion dollars a year is spent on primary and secondary school
education for children here illegally and they cannot speak a word of English!

5. $17 Billion dollars a year is spent for education for the

American-born children of illegal aliens, known as anchor babies.

6. $3 Million Dollars a DAY is spent to incarcerate illegal aliens.

7. 30% percent of all Federal Prison inmates are illegal aliens.

8. $90 Billion Dollars a year is spent on illegal aliens for Welfare &
social services by the American taxpayers.

9. $200 Billion Dollars a year in suppressed American wages are caused
by the illegal aliens.

10. The illegal aliens in the United States have a crime rate
that's two and a half times that of white non-illegal aliens. In particular,
their children, are going to make a huge additional crime problem in the US

11. During the year of 2005 there were 4 to 10 MILLION illegal aliens
that crossed our Southern Border also, as many as 19,500 illegal aliens
from Terrorist Countries. Millions of pounds of drugs, cocaine, meth, heroin
and mariju ana, crossed into the U. S from the Southern border.

12. The National Policy Institute, 'estimated that the total
cost of mass deportation would be between $206 and $230 billion or an average
cost of between $41 and $46 billion annually over a five year period.'

13. In 2006 illegal aliens sent home $45 BILLION in remittances
back to their countries of origin.

14. 'The Dark Side of Illegal Immigration: Nearly One Million
Sex Crimes Committed by Illegal Immigrants In The United States.'

The total cost is a whopping $338.3 BILLION DOLLARS A YEAR.

Are we THAT stupid?

If this doesn't bother you then just delete the message. If, on the other
hand, if it does raise the hair on the back of your neck, I hope you
forward it to every legal resident in the country including every representative in Washington, D.C.

At least I made, like, a week's worth of pinto beans for maybe $3 worth of ingredients in the Crock-Pot, and the rice was $0.99/lb. This is my first attempt in a while to make dry beans and it was very easy.

Soaked beans (I heard this helps with gas but I guess I'll find out lol)
Chicken stock
Diced onions
Diced carrots
Turkey bacon
Salt and spices to taste

Cook on low 8-10 hours

mmm

*edit* ack, i just looked upthread. i'm not starting a bean flamewar, i swear! *ducks*

We're very lucky that we can, so far anyway, absorb these costs, but we are far above the median income. I have no idea how people who were struggling before are managing now. It's awful. If prices are going to keep going up so much, food stamp amounts need to go up too. From what I've read, they were too low to feed people before prices went up so much.

At the PX it hovers around three

You explain that one to me... and we are not in the boonies

I've been growing a great deal of my own produce for the past few years, and am putting more in this year. Yes, you have to have the time to take care of the garden, and a way to store the food(freeze, dry or can), but if you have these two things, you can grow and store enough veggies and such to last year through the year.

You know it and I know it. However, we can console ourselves that our populace with this mentality at this time are going to make GREAT Brownshirts, Concentration Camp Guards, and Neighborhood Spies.

The best.

Of course, much of what we collectvely become has nothing to do with us but with whatever the Bushies have planned for the Penultimate and Final Solutions gto the Liberal Problem, likely slated to kick in during the reign of Emperor Jeb or George P. Bush.

I'm guessing they are going to try very VERY hard to avoid any overt similarities to Nazi Methodologies. Though by that time, since they won't have to bother with deception when tyhis nation is 20 years more enslaved and most who remember freedom are old or dead.

So it could go any direction. Honestly, from what I have seen over the past seven years, I am convicned that there is absolutely no bottom to the atrocities that an enslaved Amerika will permit and even embrace, ESPECIALLY if the Busies hit us again like they did on 9/11 or we have an ecoinomic catastrophe.

But the Imperial Subjects of Amerika taking to the streets? Pardon me while I fall down laughing.

That can of soup'll set you back three bucks out here, unless it's on special, which basically means "We'll let you have that at the actual fair price, without the paradise tax, just for this week." As for the milk, it's usually closer to $5 than $4.

90. Nope. We are a high-cost, low-wage environment.
With so many jobs in the notoriously low-paying hospitality industry, many have to work two jobs to get by. Many others end up moving to Vegas or someplace else on the mainland. I pay $850 to rent a small studio that was built in the '60s as a vacation rental, and that's about the best deal in town unless you want to live in a drug area or something.

I consider myself significantly underemployed as a Yale grad making in the mid- to upper $30s, but out here, that's actually not bad.

It's better'n buying a week's worth of food and then finding out the hub is having last minute dinner meetings or going out of town. The real thing that got me doing this was when we had that nasty ice storm in '04 (?)--I had a freezer/fridge full of food for the holidays, and we had no power for three days. EVERYTHING went in the garbage. Our insurance covered most less a deductible, but I was sick over it. Whatta waste! Never again.

It seems that for most Americans shopping for the best price is way too difficult. When beef is high, buy chicken. Go on the web and find the gas station on your day's route with the lowest prices. People who willingly pay top dollar for everything, while doing nothing but complain, wind up bidding up prices for the rest of us.
