What if a Democrat had taken us into Iraq?

America's guilt over Iraq

<snip>Our mission in Iraq jumped the shark a good while back. Saddam Hussein is dead. We are arbitrating a civil war of our own creation.

I have to think that many folks who are apathetic to the daily killings over there, the endless combat tours our military men and women are suffering through, the wear and tear on equipment, the gutting of our readiness for other conflicts – all these things would be driving people to anger, indignation, and action if they had never been for the war in the first place.

We are all tired of it, tired of hearing about it. Tired of being reminded.

But it must be faced. It has to be dealt with. We cannot continue this way.

We must have a change in direction.

I wish my Republican friends and family would consider: what if a Democrat had taken us into Iraq? Would you want another Democrat in office, who promised to “stay the course” for another four years?

2. I'd still be against the war
and (if it was under the same circumstances) pushing for impeachment. If unsuccessful there, protesting and supporting a challenger in the primaries.

3. I can't think of one Dem who would have done it...
Lieberman, possibly?

No, I wouldn't vote for a Dem who wanted to 'stay the course'. I would have wound up staying at home on election day.

5. Think Lyndon Johnson-
and remember that he didn't run for his last term because he could not have won!

I was against the Viet Nam war and the Iraq war. Both for pretty much the same reasons.

6. Democrats would be marching against the aggression...
.... like we did during Johnson's administration.

Just responding to your subject header.

8. I was against action in Kosovo
for a variety of reasons. I was never very vocal because it went well. If it had been a mismanaged-clusterfuck-quagmire, I would have been as pissed as I am at Bush. Of course it would have been a little different because Clinton was doing pretty well in other areas, whereas Bush has just been a disaster in every conceivable way.

9. He would have been impeached by now and probably
charged with war crimes, that is if he would have done everything the same as the Chimp.

11. I dunno, it would have probably still been the same powerful people pushing for the war...
Edited on Mon May-12-08 06:35 PM by Zevon fan
Those same powerful people who are currently helping to keep Bush and friends out of trouble. Although, I don't doubt that most rank-and-file repubs would be against anything a democrat would have done (and will do after this election)
