When Confronted By a Real Life West Virginian....
alot of the haters don't seem to have anything to say in response. Actually, I'll take that as a positive with regards to your basic humanity. It reminds me alot, of homophobes who don't seem to be able to bring themselves to attack gays face to face. As a West Virginian for Obama, today has certainly made me see this web site in a completely different light. I wish I could be more like TheBoss and let it all roll off my back. Sorry, I'm really hurt and quite frankly devastated by it.

1. You Have My Sympathies, Sir
Family accounts, anyway, maintain some of my ancestors headed west out of Charleston. People there at least had the sense to secede from Virginia and remain loyal to the Union....

2. I'm really sorry that you have had to endure such disgusting
comments. As a Virginian (well my Dad was born in VA, and I lived there for 7 years, so I consider myself at least half Virginian :D ) I had the opportunity to travel through and visit West Virginia. What a beautiful state, and most people were so friendly and helpful.

Don't let the turkeys get you down.

6. As an Obama Supporter...
I certainly don't buy the Hillary supporters as racist meme. They are good democrats with a difference of opinion. If the Hillary supporter wears a flower print dress and has a Church of God up do, then she is a racist? Thanks for the kind words.

10. Yo!
I lived in Philly for almost 20 years. Jersey rocks, despite the knocks it gets: you guys have the shore, the best strawberries, tomatoes, blueberries and Jhain (my fellow DU friend from the photography group) :hi:

7. I am sorry for how this board has treated your fine state today.
I'm for Obama too, but I cannot excuse the behavior of the folks on either side who have made this such an ugly affair, especially today.

11. I missed the posts, just coming in...
but as someone who lives, actually, on the state line between the two states, my only complaint about my westie neighbors are that they are a tad bit too friendly with their rifles! Despite the existence of a shooting range not far from here, they insist on blasting (targets) sometimes hours on end! I haven't seen much racism, but then, it's pretty secluded up here, so I don't think I could really give a good report. One thing for certain...there are idiots and bigots EVERYWHERE! ...they don't need a specific state to hide in!

12. Cheer up, they'll be beating up someone else tomorrow
I thought I was ready for it, but it got to me today, too.

Kentucky will be next. So remember your bruised feelings, fellow Mountaineers, and remember to think kindly of our neighbors across the river when their time comes.

13. As the proud descendant of West Virginians, I sympathize
My Grandfather was born and raised in Clarksburg, WVA. He served over 20 years in the Air Force, his older brothers served under Patton in Europe. West Virginians have suffered casualties and losses in disproportionate numbers in comparison to their population in every war the United States has fought in the 20th Century. These people are the salt of the earth and the spine of our nation. If they do not share our values, it may be in part that we have ignored them and neglected them in the long hours of their need. For all that they have suffered and sacrificed, West Virginians deserve our respect.

14. Bigotry is bigotry,no matter who it's aimed at, and there is
WAY to much of it here to be a democratic board.

17. I Could Kick Myself...
for not paying attention to the south bashing that takes place on this web site. I guess I just ignored it, as I don't really think of myself as a southerner. Perhaps, there is more of a bigotry towards rural Americans than any type of true regional bashing?

16. Just remember, it's only a small minority of DUers doing that.
Edited on Tue May-13-08 05:13 PM by tom_paine
People are angry, and angry people lash out.

I am not saying it's right.

There is also the possibility that it's Freeper Trolls saying shit like that, for the exact reason to hurt you and turn you off from DU and possibly even the Democratic Party.

I don't know if that's so, but in either case try to take it more in stride. Let me apologize for that small minority of DUers, if indeed it was DUers.

And let me say, as your "neighbor" over in Pennsylvania, that I have been to WVA many times. It is a beautiful state with fantastic wilderness and the people from there I have met were very nice and cool.

Don't let the "close quarters combat" of Primary Season at DU bum you out or drag you down.

Did this happen in the GD: Primaries Forum? Perhaps you might want to block the GD: Primaries Forum? I did that months ago and since then my DU Experience has been much more pleasant.

Name calling and such?

Here's what I think of your state:

20. As an Iowan
I can relate more than you know.
I am assuming you are probably talking about GD:p?
I was enjoying my time on DU until the caucus was over.....then the viciousness came out. Mostly born out of ignorance, but never the less it was hard to just let roll off your back.
I didn't come back for awhile.....then slowly I started to post again. I never go to GD:p.

I have often wondered how others felt as their home states were attacked through this process.

Since January I have seen the good does much outweigh the bad here.

I truly do understand the hurt and devastation....hang in there!!!

:toast:

21. I Had Actually Stayed Away...
from DU altogether since primary season started. I was truly excited about going down the street and casting my vote for Obama. I couldn't resist the temptation to come to DU today and see what was up. I guess I'll take the rest of the summer off.

22. All I can say is this.
I have decided whom ever the nominee is....I will support them.

I know how exciting it is to vote for a person you are excited about. It seems you don't get that many chances in life to do that. I am 50.

After I voted in Iowa it no longer mattered who I supported.....I didn't get another vote.....I stated venturing around to some other forums...there is a lot of information around this place from many good progressives.....

I hope you stick around!!
