1. Are we putting down Southerners again?
I wish people wouldn't do that.

4. Southern lefties are the toughest and most committed in the country
I know, I was one. The problem is that they've been so outnumbered for so long.

Thanks for the reminder.

5. Just in light of the recent post by a frustrated West Virginian
and the general feeling of anti-Southern bias from a minority of DUers.

There were and are plenty of great Southerners we can all look up to as great Americans.

That's all. It's meant to be positive.

10. That's wonderful but West Virginia IS NOT in the south -
- and was born a product of anti-southern sentiments during the Civil War. It is a mountain region. That's entirely different from southern.

Funny how WVa was a union state yet Virginia - the home of the Confederacy - was the first state to vote in a black governor. Who'd a thunk it??

14. Yeah, I'd say they're borderline like MD
I would, at a push, probably consider MD a Northern state. But, like Kentucky, I suspect many West Virginians consider themselves Southerners despite what side they came down on during the war, and share more culturally with the South than with Yankees.

Just my thoughts. I'm from East Texas, and DEFINITELY a Southerner, though people from Central or West Texas are less likely to see themselves that way, and people from South Texas almost certainly do not.

3. So many good Southerners. I wish I could put a name to all
of them. Who is the first one?

6. HELEN KELLER
One of my favorites, not just because she was a socialist, but precisely because she was a *Southern* socialist - not many of those.

8. I don't think people put down "Southerners"...
...necessarily. I for one insult "The South". You know, that place that is stuck in antebellum times?

The people, Southerners, can't help being born where they were born.

But, "The South" was defeated by the United States of America, and the people who can't let that go are a sad bunch.

My favorite Southerner's birthday is today.

Send him a card. (Please note: some people have had difficulties posting using the "wiki" system, if you have problems, drop me a note)

Johnny Cash...and Lucy Parsons. Say, did you read that excellent book "Death in the Haymarket"?

12. Thank you.
It always feels good to be reminded I'm in such wonderful company!

If you ever wanted to know what it feels like to be a fighter. Try being a politically active liberal fighting for what's right in the south.
