buying blue - BJ's and Costco
I believe Costco is a Blue company or has been in the past and pays their employees living wages
I am sure I have read that home depot is NOT blue while Lowe's is blue - is this right?

What about BJ's?

4. BJs isn't blue when you compare it to ZJs.
"What's a ZJ?"

"If you have to ask, you cant afford it!"

5. When buyblue.org was up and running...
Costco was listed as 100% blue, IIRC. Home Depot was red. I don't remember what the rating for Lowe's was and I've never heard of BJ's. Is it a home improvement store like Lowe's?

6. Do you mean TJ's? - Trader Joes?, oh, edit - hubby knows what BJ's is
Edited on Tue May-13-08 10:06 PM by haele
BJ's is apparently an east coast warehouse club
http://www.bjs.com/

buyblue.org is the place to look for "blue" stores.

11. my bf works at Lowe's
while I don't know if they are a "blue" co or not, they take pretty good care of their employees. Very decent wages for retail and pretty good bennies. They are more environmentally conscious than other orgs - working on becoming virtually paper free, recycling is mandatory.

14. That should have been Wal-Mart.
The only reason Wal-Mart wasn't used in that movie is because they paid to keep their name out.

Despicable.

13. Costco may be blue...
....but they've quietly settled a slew of sexual harassment claims on behalf of one of their highest echelon executives in lieu of just firing him. I know one of the women involved and what was done to her was reprehensible. They may pay a living wage to employees in the stores, but the way female employees are treated at the corporate level is such that I'll never set foot in one of their stores.

15. all corporation treat women horribly - I was interested in buying blue
and people who pay7 a living wage - this did not add information about whether BJ warehouse is blue or not - thanks for maligning a blue company though that will help walmart

16. I have both in my area
and from what I recall, BJ's is very red. I used to have a BJ's membership and stopped going there completely many years ago due to working conditions in the store. I now sport a Costco card and stop in when ever I am in the area. Costco is not as close to me as the BJ's is, and they also have a BJ's just across the highway from the only Costco around, so I always plan a stop into the Costco when I am going in that direction. I would shop there more often if they were closer to me, but the cost of gas stops me from driving the 45 minutes for that alone.

YMMV.

17. thanks for information about costco and bj warehouse -
The costco is within 20 miles while walmart is 5 miles and bj is a different direction and about 10-15 miles and right next to a lowe's - I was surprised to run across the costco - the one I had been looking at was about 35 miles away - I just want to buy blue when I can - some I pick for different reasons - but WalMart has been off my radar for about three years now - bought one thing while crossing the country because no one else carried the item or they wanted $30 to 40 dollars more - I have been very proud of myself for completely staying out of their stores -

Are the memberships worth it? It seems to be a high price for discounts.

I have a membership to Barnes and Noble because they are blue but so many times amazon beats them by sometimes 10-30 dollars on a book - I try to time my purchases with discount coupons they send me and get airline miles by going through my frequent flyer site - I question having the membership but SO want to support blue companies since they can leverage a lot more money for my ideals than I can.

19. The membership is $35 a year
and with that you get a second card for a family member as well. If there are two of you (even a friend) who you could share the membership cost and the card with, it would make it worth it even if you only go a few times a year. I have purchased things at Costco that no one else even carries and they keep their overhead low by only carrying around 4,000 products in total. They only have certain vendors/manufacturers that they do business with as well, so you will be buying from the same family of product groups each time you visit even if a model changes.

Find a buddy to share the membership cost with and try it for a year. I think you'll like it. Heck, you can even buy a casket from Costco.com and they are reasonably priced! Where else can you do that?

18. I don't think Lowe's is blue, per se,
but much better to their employees, etc. than Home Depot.

20. I'm pretty sure nonmembers can buy from costco.com
I think they'd pay 5% more for not being members, but the deals are still good.

The thing I like about Costco is that they are quality-oriented as well as price-oriented. It saves a lot of time with comparison shopping, because I know they don't sell crap just because it's cheap--if they sell it, it's probably a good product.

Can you tell I :loveya: Costco?
