My dad is against abortion.
He said he is against it because when he was a kid, he saw his grandpa throw surplus puppies off a cliff. Is that a legitimate reason?

1. Tell your dad not to have one -- what he's against is infanticide not abortion
Abortions don't eliminate babies, they terminate fetuses that couldn't live outside the body of the mother. ANYONE would be against someone throwing surplus babies (or puppies) off a cliff. But just the same, we shouldn't throw a young woman's life off a cliff because some self righteous person wants to force his definition of "life" onto her.

2. No, because it is not the same thing
Ask him if he would still be against abortion if your mom got pregnant and something went terribly wrong and she would die if she carried the baby to term. Ask him if he would still be against abortion if his daughter or niece was brutally raped and got pregnant by it. Finally, ask him if he knows what a zygote is. Because in early term abortions, this is what is aborted. In abortions, a full-term baby is NOT "flung over a cliff".

3. Out of curiosity, how does he feel about contraception and comprehensive
sex education?

5. He is for it.
:) He also complains about how kids are not told to use condoms.

He is a kind of Ron Paul'ish leaning...

4. Frankly, I also think abortion is a bad idea
Especially, when 80% of them can be avoided if this country, from day one, had we focused on a comprehensive program of available contraception, sex education and woman's health care.

But when you have the head in a hole gang running things, elective abortions at the current levels become a necessity As long as there is always a need to terminate pregnancies to save women's lives, no one except the doctors and the patients should weigh in on this issue.

If the anti-abortion crowd was really serious about reducing the number of abortions in this country, they should pull their heads out of their collective asses, get off the "abstinence only" bandwagon and go about it the smart way.

7. I don't know any pro-choice person who is all for abortion.
You can be against abortion but still pro-choice.

8. I'm opposed to Abortion because I was adopted
So I can't help thinking, what if my Mother had decided to abort me (or my brother).

That said, being opposed to women having Abortions is not the same thing as believing Abortions should be illegal. Woman should have the right to have an abortion, I just feel they should choose not to.

I also think people should give up smoking and tailgating.

9. I have no problem with his being against abortion. My problem would be if he tried to stop other
people from exercising their choice.

10. if he is using this as an excuse to vote for Republicans, tell him Democrats will do the same thing

11. i know several single mothers that are really struggling in todays
economy, so if he is REALLY against abortion, make sure he is donating to food banks, and voting for those officials who will make sure we have good jobs, decent public schools, available and affordable daycare.

14. Your dad has a right to his feelings and opinions
You have your right to yours. It's certainly not worth arguing about, unless that is the nature of your relationship or something.

posters on a message board answer your tough pholosophical questions for you?

Just curious...

18. No it's not a legitimate reason
In fact, that's one of the creepiest reasons I've heard lately.

And what does "against abortion" mean exactly? He certainly isn't ever going to have one.
