Jimmy Carter, Habitat for Humanity and rebuilding in South Mississippi

"It's a very exciting, unpredictable, adventurous, gratifying experience for us every year," Carter said.

This 25th year of his Habitat for Humanity partnership is different from the former president's past projects, which he says usually involve rehabilitating the "slums" and "most embarrassing parts of a city." This time, Carter is building back the homes that Katrina washed away.

"The folks have done such a heroic job themselves repairing the damage that was done. So we just feel like we're joining in a victory parade that I hope will last for the next 10 years," Carter said.

The home President Carter is building is one of more than 100 homes volunteers will work on this week in South Mississippi. But the former president says it will take much more work to hammer out the housing crisis on the coast.

Carter says the failure of the "all perils insurance" bill is a splinter in the progress. Habitat homeowners will pay $600 a month for their home and their insurance will be just as costly.

5. Can you visualize Bush building a house in anything but
a photo op?
These interviews are lovely - look at the joy in Carter's face.

7. My son is in Gulfport Miss with Habitat this week!
He's working on new houses down there with Habitat for Humanity this week.
He saw Carter speak on Sunday and told us what a great speech it was.

Thanks for the article.
