Fully Electric Car Gets 100 Miles Per Charge, Cheaper than a Prius
Edited on Wed May-14-08 10:36 AM by jsamuel
A Triac car is scheduled to be for sale in July.

Some main points to consider:

- Just under $20,000.
- 100 Miles Per Charge.
- Can get 70-80 MPH on a freeway.
- Small.
- Only 3 wheels.
- Looks kind of funny.
- Race car roll cage for safety.

2. That's great if you don't have anyone else to cart around.
Hopefully there will be new generations of this technology, and the issue will be addressed. Because Grandma wants to take the babies everywhere.

6. You could say the same for walking
Obviously, it's not for everyone -- people have different needs.

However, the last time I was in bumper-to-bumper traffic on a four-lane highway, about 90 percent of the cars had one person in them.

14. There are several other larger EV designs. They're just more expensive.
The Roadster and I think one or two others are on the market now, and the Volt and Whitestar are slated for the next couple years at a $50k price point.

3. That'll work well in warm-weather climates. In snowy regions like
mine, I don't think we'll be safe in that.

16. All electric cars are great for cities where traffic jams are the norm
When you let off the accelerator the engine is off, no juice being used except for music or lights or heat...Not sure how AC would be accomplished

23. They use electric AC

The Prius does this, and it's the best climate control system I've ever had in a car.

27. It does have an impact
Of course, when the battery charge gets low with the Prius, they get topped back up with a combination of regenerative braking and charging off the IC engine.

As far as pure electric vehicles go, I'm not sure. The Tesla Roadster had this to say in one of their updates:

165 miles of impatient commuting, aggressive stops and starts, high speeds, and air conditioning on from Saratoga Gap to San Carlos via Hwy 9, Hwy 85 and I-280 (a worst-case scenario)

That's down from the 200 mile range that they are currently touting, so there is definitely an impact.

17. Three wheels?
Didn't they stop making three wheel ATV's because they were too easy to roll over?

19. Those ATVs had the single wheel in the front.
People were also racing them off-road (hills and ruts) when the flips occurred. It was dangerous because it threw the rider forward and to the side, onto their head and neck.

With the single wheel in the back, I'd guess you'd mainly need to worry about roll overs while backing up, and since that is typically done quite slowly, on generally level roads and parking spots, it's probably not a big issue.

22. I have a couple friends with those three-wheelers
They are damn scary to ride at high speeds too! Its kinda fun when you're riding around slow on two wheels tilted over to the side and just balance it that way. But whats the fun in that? I can ride as fast as I can on my dirtbike going through ruts climbing hills and actually not get scared at all.

21. The difference is that the two wheel end is fully articulated. i.e.,
both wheels stay on the road even while the vehicle is leaning into a turn. It's a wonderful technological advance.

18. Oooooh... it has a "race car roll cage "!
That would help when negotiations with huge trucks takes an unfortunate turn.

I'm so very glad to see alternative technology cars! I thought they were coming out 20 years ago. Better late than never.

26. Supposedly, the air car will go 200 miles on a charge-up and cost about $18,000
and it has 4 wheels. Plus there are no batteries to contend with. It uses vegetable oil to lubricate the engine, which need only be changed every 33,000 miles since there's no burning of hydrocarbons or internal combustion. And instead of replacing batteries, you might occasionally have to replace an air tank, which is lighter and cheaper. They're supposed to hit the U.S. market later this year.
