Rep Tom Davis(R)-"This is the floor, We're below the floor."
HOUSE GOPERS STOMPING MAD OVER PROSPECTS

From NBC's Mike Viqueira
Lot's of very glum faces among House GOP members this morning as they emerged from their weekly closed-door session. The political situation is not good, and they aren't even trying to deny it.

Rep. Tom Davis stomped on the concrete floor of the Capitol basement when asked by reporters about Republican fortunes at the moment.

"This is the floor," he said, by way of explanation. "We're below the floor."

Inside the meeting, Davis had just presented his colleagues with what he said was a 20-page memo outlining his prescription for a way out of this mess. He did not offer details to the press, yet did not spare the party and the president scathing criticism in his public comments.

"The president swallows the microphone every time he opens his mouth," Davis said.

He believes Bush's staunch opposition to the Democratic housing bill and the SCHIP bill, for example, is hurting rank and file. Look at yesterday's vote on the SPRO, where Republicans defied the president in droves. Lo and behold, the White House says today that it will not veto the bill.

Asked if he thought there should be a change in House GOP leadership, he brought up the 2006 election and the loss of Congress, then wondered aloud why, when "the plane is being flown into the mountain," there has been no change in direction.>>>>> snip

1. Tom has got be worried that being a repub lobbyist in 2009 isn't going to pay the bills
Tom is leaving Congress and probably expects to cash in as a lobbyist. But as a former repub member, his "influence" is going to be of limited use after the repub caucus in the House is eviscerated in November.

5. Plus his wife got spanked in her reelection bid as State Senator..
and Tommy's prospects were getting dimmer in this District, and to think he had thoughts of running for John Warner's seat at one time, and plugging his wife into his seat...

2. This Is Why The Republicans Tossed Nixon
Congressional Republicans were a lot smarter then - they knew that Nixon was killing their own prospects, so they sent Goldwater to tell him to pack his bags and stanch the blood loss.

Today's Republicans are dumber than posts, and worked hard to keep their dead albatross in office.

3. I'm just amazed -- amazed -- that it took this long.
Let it forever be said about those who were in a position to do something about it but did nothing: they put a cheap, unscrupulous party over the good name of this country.

7. From what I've seen during House committee hearings, this man was a rabid defender of BushCo.
Which makes me wonder what "I'm-taking-the-gavel-&-turning-out-the-lights-on-the-Democrats" Sensenbrenner is saying these days.
