"personhood amendment" backers submit signatures

'Personhood' amendment backers submit signatures
By Jean Torkelson, Rocky Mountain News (Contact)
Tuesday, May 13, 2008
Backers of a so-called personhood amendment march to the secretary of state's office to submit 131,235 signatures in an effort to get the initiative on the November ballot.

Supporters of a movement to declare a fertilized human egg a person in the state constitution turned in 131,235 voter signatures Tuesday to get a measure on the November ballot.

They called it a historic step toward Colorado becoming the first state to pass a "personhood amendment."

Opponents said it's an attempt to erode abortion rights.

"Colorado will become ground zero for the issue of life in the United States of America," supporter Mark Hoteling told an ebullient crowd of more than 100 people at the Knights of Columbus Hall near the Capitol.

. . . . . . . .
.

The amendment defines a person as including "any human being from the moment of fertilization."
to canvass 500 churches and 80 percent of Colorado's counties to collect the signatures, Burton told the crowd.
. . . . .
Opponents also weighed in Tuesday to warn that a personhood amendment was the first step to overturning Roe vs. Wade and toward government interference in matters such as birth control, in-vitro fertilization and stem cell research.

"This is a dangerous and deceptive amendment which we know really would threaten health care access in Colorado and create government involvement in personal decision-making," said Toni Panetta of Protect Families Protect Choices.

(it doesn't say it in this article, but the one in the fishwrap known as the gazette stated that it would impact not only abortion but some forms of birth control (sorry, can't find that story online)

kristi burton, by the way, received her marching orders from god when she was 13, and sick in bed with the flu. god spoke to her and told her this was her mission. (most people who hear voices when running a fever understand that it is hallucinations) she was home-schooled, and is now getting her law degree online.

2. So ... let's say this passes.
What happens to the woman whose body contains that fertilized egg? What exactly are her rights? Will she be required to stay home and remain bedridden so she doesn't endanger the fertilized egg? Will employers find excuses to fire pregnant women because they don't want to be held responsible if she falls in the workplace and has a miscarriage? If the woman doesn't eat right, will she be prosecuted? If she misses a doctor's appointment, will she be carted off to jail for neglecting to get prenatal care for the egg? Will "parents" get a tax deduction for their egg person?

If something inside your body has the full legal rights of a human being, then your rights as a human being will cease to exist because you will be the only person who can truly "care" for it. If you don't, you could be charged with endangering the "life" of another "human being" ... so how are you supposed to live your own life for those nine months?

4. yes, the parasite has more rights than the host.
as I keep pointing out, ALL anti-choice arguments have, at their heart, a deep and profound hatred for women, because each and every argument, whether based on religion or not, says that some THING (the egg) or someone (sperm donor, church, state, or some other unrelated third party) is more valuable than the woman.

look at that idiot who proposed legislation that would require all women who had miscarriages to report to the police. look at the rep from (forgot whether it was PA or OH) who wanted to examine all women of child bearing age crossing the state line to make sure they were still pregnant when they returned (no, I am NOT making this up)

women, according to these people, are nothing more than brood mares.

8. I remember both of those idiots
Implying that miscarriages should be treated as a potential crime was bad ... but the "crossing the state line" thing was insane!

These people care more about a fertilized egg than they do about a living, breathing human being. :-(

3. However, if that personhood is gay, they are allowed to be aborted at anytime
Even after birth.

Crap - these nuts want to give flipping eggs more rights than me.

6. I wonder if this passes
what wiil be the implications for corporations in CO if a "person" is defined as only a "human being from the moment of fertilization"? No more immunity from responsibility for criminal behavior?

I don't think it will pass or if passed it will be overturned because "any human being from the moment of fertilization" is a non-sequiter. A fertilized egg is not a human being.
