FISA modernization bill
From People for the American Way.

Word from Capitol Hill is that a "compromise" is in the works to get a new FISA modernization bill in front of the House and Senate as early as this week.

The president and his congressional Republican allies are still demanding telecom immunity and the ability to spy on Americans without individualized warrants. Some Democrats at the table seem poised to capitulate.

Don't let your representative compromise away YOUR constitutional rights.

Call your member of Congress now and urge a vote of NO on any FISA modernization bill that allows the government to spy without individualized warrants and grants telecom companies retroactive immunity.

A few months back we scored a major victory when the House of Representatives stopped a Senate-passed FISA modernization bill which would have allowed for continued warrantless spying and granted telecommunications companies blanket immunity for their role in the NSA’s domestic surveillance program.

Don't let Congress trash that victory with an ill-conceived "compromise."

1. Republicans even in their weakened state are able to put up a fight. Sad certain Dems want to run.
I wonder aloud exactly which Dems are ready to capitulate. Harry Reid?

When there's blood in the water, you go in for the kill. You don't run.

If somebody runs even though they hold the advantage, the person is either on somebody else's payroll, or he really is that much of a coward.

3. Immunity
is based on the notion that though Bush's program is illegal, unconstitutional and likely being used for ulterior reasons (blackmail, intimidation, etc.), he acted in good faith.

Why should the public believe that Bush acted in good faith? Did he act in good faith in the lead up to 9/11? Has he ever acted in good faith? The idea that the "leaders" conduct is above the fray=authoritarian propaganda. The justification for torture is based on the same absurd notion. What supporters of these policies fail to address is Bush's lack of credibility in relation to counterterrorism policy (for example 9/11) and his track record of deceit at every turn.
