Help get an investigation of the Pentagon pundit program

Over a week ago, the New York Times published a major investigative article, detailing a secret Pentagon program the Times said was designed to recruit and cultivate the "military analysts" you see on the major news networks in an attempt to create coverage favorable to the Bush Administration's policy in Iraq.

The Times described an extensive program, with dozens of television analysts involved, some of whom had extensive business ties to the Defense Department—in fact they called it "an effort to transform the analysts into a kind of media Trojan horse—an instrument intended to shape terrorism coverage from inside the major TV and radio networks."

Since that story ran, there's been a virtual news blackout, and we haven't gotten any closer to finding out the real story.

You can change that. I sent a letter to the Government Accountability Office requesting an investigation, and I'd like you to show your support by virtually "co-signing" the letter with me. Only with an overwhelming display of grassroots energy can we put this story in the spotlight and press for answers.

The Pentagon quickly issued a statement that they've ended the program, but I still believe that we need to have a complete accounting of exactly what was happening, who was involved, and what it accomplished. I don't think that's too much to ask—do you?

We know the life-or-death consequences of policy decisions in Iraq and Afghanistan—and we know that these policies should be debated and defended without secret programs designed to tailor the news for the Administration's goals. This is too important to brush aside. We must demand answers.

1. I believe. We ought to have the right to many freedoms that

have been recently made clear to us are not ours because of war. Sure we should look into this little incident. But all the while we are doing that they are all negotiating to further spy on us and they want immunity too. I guess we Americans are being asked to come to a table full of outrages illigal behavior and sign on the line that we consider it wrong, and then have nothing done. But what the heck- let's open this up too. Thanks Senator Kerry.

They've been doing it for years!!! Not little in my book and I'm glad he's pursuing it.

3. Media is quiet on this - we had to push Downing Street Memos into the light.

Looks like we'll have an even tougher task with this one.

Get into the trenches and start digging till we hiy paydirt.

4. I'm aware of the DSM's...

Kerry is trying to shed light on this and I'm sure it will take a lot of pushing, digging and fighting with the Penatgon and *.

As it says in his letter....

"But since that story, there's been little effort to find out more about this program,
and essentially zero coverage of the revelation on television news.

With a near total blackout on the story from the television news networks,

we need the American people to demand answers!"

6. It was Kerry and Conyers who used letters of inquiry to push DSM into the news.

This one looks a lot tougher. Hopefully, he can form an approach to take for Obama to work into the campaign. Tough, though, because when media knows you want THEIR roles examined, then they work their asses off to bury you.

5. Kerry is one of the few who sticks his neck out for open government issues. I join him

on these issues because it OUR DUTY as citizens to demand open and accountable government.
