The Thrill Is Gone
I swore off GD: P a couple days ago, so I'm trying to get back into pre-primary mode. I've been to see Keith Olbermann's special comment, I went to read Bush's speech in which he accuses Obama of being a latter-day Hitler appeaser, I'm still trying to wrap my mind around Bush calling upon the people of India and China to eat less food cause if they eat like we eat then we won't be able to eat like we eat any more, and since only one populous nation can afford to gorge itself at the trough it should be us...and you'd think all that would be, you know, inspiring.

But somehow it's not happening. I look at Bush, and instead of the old fire in the belly, I just feel sort of a combination of pity and disgust.

He's over. Sure, the 2008 presidential race could still be FUBARed to the point where we might be stuck with a McCain presidency, and about that I certainly am still very exercised. But when it comes to Bush himself...he's just a sad, sad, crazy little man still trying to make himself feel relevant at a time when all the people around him have already written *his* epitaph and are now working on how best to save their own asses. Sure, he's still the POTUS--well, as much as he ever was. But seriously, when's the last time anyone paid any real attention to him? Olbermann is probably the first pundit in a long time to actually give a shit about anything Bush has said recently. And really, "shut the hell up" is about the only response most of what comes out of Bush these days deserves. Go away, little man. Your work here is done. Now the adults are busy working on how to fix all the shit you broke.

I'm not saying I wouldn't enjoy seeing him leave office a few months ahead of schedule, or that I won't rejoice and be glad when he finally leaves, or that I'm done holding him responsible for all the crap that's happened here and around the world because of his insane troll presidency. I guess I just figure he's already on the way to his own little hell, so why not just get out of his way.

What most toddlers really want most, apart from their own way, is attention. Bush always seemed to me like the toddler president--tantrum-throwing, narcissistic, emotionally immature, hitting when he got mad, and just intelligent enough to really trash the place. So it cheers me up to see him finally dropping out of the headlines, subsiding into the oblivion I'm sure he hates. I bet he's being extra-imperious to his staff to make up for it. "I want TWO grilled cheese sandwiches! And make sure you cut the crusts off neatly this time!"

It will be a good feeling when he's finally out of office. Till then, really, he may as well get back out on the golf course, cause nothing else he does is going to be any more meaningful than getting onto the green in 3.

C ya,

The Plaid Adder

1. This line you wrote may be the best one I have read on DU in a month
"I'm still trying to wrap my mind around Bush calling upon the people of India and China to eat less food cause if they eat like we eat then we won't be able to eat like we eat any more"

2. My dear Plaid Adder...
You sound really tired, ground down by these awful years under Bush...

He's already fallen off my radar...

And now I'm energized, thinking about Obama and our country's future!

I think he's going to run one hell of a campaign, and I am looking forward to that so damn much.

I hope you feel better very soon...

:hi:

5. He's looking like a drunk driver just before sentencing.
He killed and maimed a lot of people and he knows the judgement of history will be harsh.

7. I can't even be bothered to yell at the TV any more
when Bush is on. I used to feel I had to watch his stupid, barely coherent speeches just to know what the anti-christ is saying. But I don't even care anymore. I'm so focused on 2009 that it just doesn't matter any more. I don't even think there is anything he can do to jump the shark at this moment. He is such a "has-been" war criminal that the only thing that might inspire me to pay attention to anything he says is a war crimes trial.

I'll be cheering when he slinks out of the White House.

9. I really like you.
I don't know that I've ever replied to any of your posts before, but I just want you to know reading your posts way back at the beginning was part of the reason I joined DU. Oh sure, we have our share of flamefests and snark but amongst all that are the posters, like you, who not only post thoughtfully, but also artfully.

Thanks
Rosemary

12. Isn't this like Hoover's last months in office?
I remember reading about a Broadway play running in 1932. One scene had former millionaires, still in their formal finery (although looking a little shabby) eating in an automat. Doing things like mixing the ketchup with hot water to make tomato soup. And they sang a cynical little song that for years were popular - although as a kid, I never heard the lyrics.

Mis-ter Her-bert Hoo-ver
Says the time has come to buy,
So let's have a-noth-er cup of cof-fee
And let's have a-noth-er piece of pie!

And the Republicans nominated Hoover for another term, claiming that his conservative candidacy "belied the vanity of earthly things," or something like that. Does anyone imagine that Bush will not show up at the Republican convention and won't be given at least polite applause? They'll be applauding, of course, for his act to end and for him to get the hell off the stage.

14. But, Plaid Adder, he's sacrificed so much
He gave up golf, for chrissakes. That bitter feeling in the pit of your stomach is just the aftertaste of a long, sad episode of our American history. Whomever is next up in the tee box will drive him and his minions far, far away.

She must be a recessive (or somebody else's child). That she would avoid the White House as her wedding site shows that there is one "passing for human" on the Bush family tree.

Or maybe it was just paranoia--fear of the public booing/attacks/egging?

16. I thoroughly join you in the "pity and disgust" thought
he's been nothing but a piece of flyshit on the wall of life for a very long time now. The only thing he's gonna be remembered for is the 5000 deaths of our servicepersonnel in Iraq because he felf ballzy.

Please, someone show him the door.

Peace

17. I used to fear that he would refuse to leave
and declare himself president for life. But he feels so irrelevant now it's like he's already gone. I think we're all starting to finally believe it: There will be an end to this nightmare.

I think Cheney enjoys the power he bestowed on himself, the Vice President.

20. This Is Just The Beginning...The Manchild Refuses To Leave Quietly
Remember, his handlers...rove, hughes and card are gone and he's "off the leash". The one thing that sure must be getting to his assholiness is how irrelevant he's becoming and he doesn't like it. The manchild has lived in the bubble of self importance and doesn't want to give up the attention. I expect him to play attack dog...or try to...during the election and we've already seen how he's coordinating with Gramps campaign...but with a twist.

For most of us the thought of Gramps being a third boooosh term is the ultimate evil...but for the manchild, it's his "legacy". He wants Gramps to win as vindication for his own corrupt regime and to ensure a clean escape. The real problem is that the GOOP is and will be replaying the 2000 and 2004 elections but the country has changed. While the manchild is a liability for 70% of the electorate, he's still a deity to the other 30%...the ones Gramps needs for money and as a "base" if he stands any chance of winning. Thus Gramps will have a tough time controlling boooshie and this could be a very good thing for us.

This country is suffering a bad case of booooosh fatigue and it gets worse every time another casket is laid into the ground, the price of a gallon of gas goes up, when another job or benefits are lost...almost everyone has a reason to despise this regime and its "legacy". The last people who appear to realize this is the corporate media and the repugnican party. May they both learn the hard way.

Welcome back to the land of sanity. I avoided the Pit...but I will admit I did browse...and welcome back all the regulars in uniting to kick some major ass this November.

Cheers...

:toast:

22. Those could very well be my own feelings you are expressing.
I went to a political humor site that had pictures of when he fell off the bicycle, among other snafus of his over the last 7 years. It just didn't have that same zing to it as before. He seems so trivial and impotent now. It's almost as if he is now so irrelevant that it doesn't matter any more what he says or does. He has trashed the place and everyone is sick of him, even his own party. He could very well pack his bags and go ahead and take his annual 5 month vacation starting now and it wouldn't matter much. No one would even notice.
