1. Good news for gay couples: Bad news because this will wake up the fundies
Look for McSame to say something about "traditional marriage" today. Possibly a proposal for a Constitutional Amendment.

22. Let him talk. This is a loser issue for the Republicans.
Every year more people become sympathetic to equal rights for gay Americans. They've flogged this dead horse one time too many.

23. I agree, but I was holding out hopes the fundies would sleep through this election
Still, this is a happy day for many Californians, even if it does cheapen my marriage and increase the odds we will be turned into pillars of salt ;-)

California Supreme Court overturns gay marriage ban

http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-gaymarriage16-2008may16,1,4027698.story

By Maura Dolan, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer

SAN FRANCISCO --

The California Supreme Court ruled today that same-sex couples should be permitted to marry,
rejecting state marriage laws as discriminatory.

The state high court's ruling was unlikely to end the debate over gay matrimony in California.
A group has circulated petitions for a November ballot initiative that would amend the state Constitution
to block same-sex marriage, and the Legislature has twice passed bills to authorize gay marriage.
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed both.

snip-->

Today's ruling by the Republican-dominated court affects more than 100,000 same-sex couples in the state, about a quarter of whom have children, according to U.S. census figures. It came after high courts in New York, Washington and New Jersey refused to extend marriage rights to gay couples. Only Massachusetts' top court has ruled in favor of permitting gays to wed.

19. How long will this last?
Edited on Thu May-15-08 12:48 PM by Donald Ian Rankin
I've seen several posters saying this is likely to be overturned in a referendum - what are the odds of that not happening?

That said, even if it gets overturned, it will probably make it more likely to happen again or elsewhere, which is something.

20. Even if a referendum were passed,
that would not make the ban constitutional. The referendum itself would be overturned.

21. if a referendum is passed
what happens to the marriages that take place between now, when they're legal, and then? Constitutionally, and I'm not a lawyer, I believe ex post facto laws making them illegal are themselves illegal.

26. There was a referendum *already.* This overturns it.
The only thing left for the bigots is a constitutional amendment and even the Republican Gov. doesn't support it.

28. No, the next referendum, in November, if it qualifies for the ballot, will overturn this ruling
By making the same-sex marriage ban a Constitutional amendment.

29. Is there a realistic chance of such an amendment being approved?
I don't know. I'm just angry to hear this after my best friend in CA just asked me to be her matron of honor. She's so excited. :(

36. She's not in a relationship now
Sorry, I can see I gave the wrong impression. We've been friends for 20 years and we've always joked about me being her maid/matron of honor one day. But with this ruling it finally seemed real and so she asked me outright.

Now after giving her the good news I'm going to have to break it to her that the ruling may not last. She'll be crushed.

GOD DAMNED INTOLERANT JACKASSES!!
