Am I the only one noticing less cars on the road? I have been
driving the exact same 11 mile route for close to five years, leaving at the same time every day. I set a record tonight for the shortest elapsed time from the office to my house. There are clearly less cars in the morning too.

Are you eating more starch now than you were a year ago? I know I am, just to keep the price of restaurant lunches affordable.

1. I've noticed a dropoff in discretionary driving on weekends.....
..... people are saving those precious droplets of gasoline for their commute.

3. Where I live, traffic is roughly the same. Of course, where I live, there is little mass transit.
People must get to work with a car around these parts. What they're cutting back on is eating out and going on road trips. I think this summer is going to be a bad one in terms of tourism and hospitality. The slumping economy and record high gas prices are working in concert here.

5. We've noticed it for several weeks.
Not just the streets and freeways, but the parking lots at stores, too.

10. We were out on a Saturday night a couple of weeks ago. What
was striking was the nearly total absence of cars at restaurants.

in the afternoon. Three transfers on the bus. What do you suggest?

13. My sweat smells just as bad as when I was twenty. I can do
ten miles on a bike but would never ride one on city streets. The bike trail runs several miles away from the office. I wear a coat and tie at work, so unless we get a locker room with showers it ain't gonna happen.

16. I only live 3 miles from work and I unapologetically drive, burning a gallon of gas a week.
I do on occasion ride my bike. I do see more bikes now for one very good reason--the weather has finally warmed up enough so it is nice enough to ride a bike. Happens every year at this time.

striving for days with no driving and no shopping. Today was one of those days. I have to go out and buy coffee for the coffee pot tomorrow, though.

that there are a lot less SUV's in the grocery store parking lot and a lot more little cars like mine!

In fact I've noticed MORE traffic over the past week or so
(?). Early departures for the Memorial Day weekend maybe?

15. I've noticed that the buses are more crowded
I'm lucky if I can get a seat unless I board the bus either at the station or in the burbs, where fewer people use mass transit.

18. Funny.. I was just thinking that today.
On the way to the unemployment office... I sat by an on ramp for I-75, and there were only 2 cars there at 9 a.m.? Very strange? Almost eerie... it felt like I was in a Mad Max world?

20. I haven't noticed less other cars, but my car makes one less, for sure.
I drive only when I need to and "make a circle." I cannot afford the gas and have chosen groceries over unnecessary trips.

22. I was up in Yosemite last weekend and it was EMPTY.
It was a perfect day to be in the mountains, the kind of day that usually creates lines at the gates and a parking nightmare on the valley floor. Instead, parking was plentiful and the majority of the tourists were in on buses.

Not that I'm complaining, mind you.

I sort of marked it up to the students being gone (WVU) but it was more than that.
