Food stamp recipients scramble for food
CHICAGO - Danielle Brown stands outside a South Side market at midnight, braving the spring chill for her first chance to buy groceries since her food stamps ran out nearly two weeks ago.

For days, Brown said, she has been turning cans of "whatever we got in the cabinet" into breakfast, lunch and dinner for her children, ages 1 and 3.

"Ain't got no food left, the kids are probably hungry," said Brown, a 23-year-old single mother who relies heavily on her $312 monthly allotment of food stamps — a ration adjusted just once a year, in October.

3. 312 dollars is plenty to feed a person for a month.
Unfortunately the kids are screwed. How the hell do we expect this woman to feed her children & herself for that? That is just about ten dollars a day for all meals. That is about 1.10 per individual per meal. What can you cook that costs 1.10 per meal?

4. Not to be insensitive, but...
...is this woman a typical GOP voter?

Who will once again vote against her own interests?

there is no typical GOP voter.

There are hardly any GOP voters.

This is the area once represented in the Illinois Senate by an up-and-coming progressive politician named Barack Obama.

edit: Do these look like typical GOP voters? (different people, same market)

7. The charcoal is troubling.. That tells me they have no gas
in the summer it's no biggie, but in the winter, people die all the time from poor people using charcoal indoors when it's too cold to cook outside:(

8. Yikes! I hadn't even noticed that
I've lived in poor areas (Bridgeport, CT, Jersey City, upper Manhattan) and I can't recall ever seeing people buy charcoal in small markets like that. :scared:

9. Touche.
There is no typical GOP voter, but no, those people do not look like typical GOP voters.

I sit corrected.
