For but a moment (a rant/observation)

[The Straight Story]

For but a moment we set aside our differences and came together on that terrible day of 9/11.

Over 3000 dead, many wounded, our country came to a standstill. The tragedy of so many who lost their lives and the sadness we saw in the faces of those that lost a loved on put life into perspective.

For but a moment, we were one.

And yet now, with more than that dead in a war based on lies, and many more wounded, we don't even hardly think about it anymore.

Because it was all spread out over time. Because we believe those that have died did so for a noble cause.

We sent over 4000 innocent people to their graves (not to mention citizens of Iraq).

And for what?

It has been worse by the numbers than 9/11, and yet it is not all over the news everyday. Maybe because they died only a few at a time.

Maybe because we expect this to all be because it is a war. But those hijackers had no more right to do what they did than we do now.

For but a moment our entire nation was in mourning over the loses we suffered.

But now we just shrug off the deaths of our own people in a senseless war as business as usual.

We did change after 9/11. But in the end, I don't think we changed for the better.

We should have grieved then. And we should be doing so now. Not just for this damned war - but for those without health care, our homeless, our own people here suffering every damned day when we could be doing something about it all.

But instead - we are spending our money and resources on yet more killing.

For but a moment we came together and resolved to fight against the things that threatened us.

And then we forgot that the greatest threat we had was from within. Apathy, war, not caring about each other.

Maybe because we only see death and hell when it happens on a mass scale all at once. Maybe we should learn to see it as it is each day and over time here.

I won't forget 9/11. And I won't forget those who are homeless, dying of aids, sick and alone, wanting medical care.

If the RW fought so hard for all of us the war would not be Iraq, it would be here against the real threats we face.
