Man accused of stealing fruit demands apology

MANATEE, Fla. — A Sarasota man police say stole a grocery store plum says he wants an apology and for prosecutors not to pursue charges against him.

A Manatee County Sheriff's Office report says 63-year-old Eduardo Garcia Roves was arrested at a Save-A-Lot store after allegedly failing to pay for a 55 cent plum.

Roves says the plum was a gift from a woman he helped to her car and that he had also purchased about $10 of groceries with a $100 bill.

Protesters have demonstrated outside the store in support of Roves, saying he was discriminated against because he spoke little English.
