Mayor challenges pope during Genoa visit
Source: Reuters

The pro-abortion mayor of this large northwestern port city suggested to Pope Benedict in a public address on Sunday that the Church could not impose its views on the personal choices of citizens in a lay state.

Speaking during a visit by the pope to a children's hospital, Mayor Marta Vincenzi told him a democratic state had to "work for the common good so that citizens can orient their lifestyles without impositions or inappropriate limitations".

Earlier in the week, the Pope had condemned Italy's abortion law, while Vincenzi, a leftist, had attended a pro-abortion rights demonstration in Genoa, one of Italy's biggest cities.

Vincenzi told the pope the challenge in governing was to "restate principles while at the same time avoiding transforming ethics into a political battlefield".

2. to say it to the man's face takes courage.
I wish more had that courage. I say, if you don't believe in abortion, then don't do it. But it is not for you to decide what other's should believe. I personally do not believe in abortion. I would not have one. But that does not give me the right to decide that for another woman. I am not in her shoes, her circumstance and with her perspective. It maddens me that so many would seek to impose their will and ideas on others.

3. Wow, that took courage, good for him! Great that he is not afraid to speak out against the Pope.
As if the Pope has some type of sacred hold on morality..get to work Pope keeping the children that are here safe from pedophiles..and put more effort in exposing pedophiles.

'Pro choice' isn't that common a phrase, apart from in the US, and if it's not in regular use, it's not very descriptive.
