I am so totally envious...if I mocked you it would be out of jealousy. I live an hour and a half from work...it SUCKS. Walking to work probably isn't an option for me either, I couldn't stand to live in this God forsaken suburb. But walk to work...wow..you're LUCKY.

I walk to lunch a decent amount when I do go out, which is not that often, and have had people give me a funny look. It sucks too because the area where I work is about as pedestrian unfriendly as you can imagine. All of the intersections have "no pedestrian signs" and the closest cross walk is about a quarter mile out of the way - which if I am on "a walk" is not a big problem, but when I am just trying to get to the grocery store across the street and right back it's annoying.

Also, there are few sidewalks, and most are impractical and end abruptly. I hate suburbia and wish I could find a job closer to where I live.

I truly don't see what to mock here. As one who for a few years had an hour each way commute that sometimes stretched to more than an hour and a half, I think you can only have pity for your co-worker. Life is so much better without the commute.

22. Would really be jealous of us in Chapel Hill - walkable plus free buses

We are striving for more people living and working in the same neighborhood. Still have many people communting from outside of town and they are really feeling the increase in gas prices.

It is possible to live in Chapel Hill without a car. Free buses for everyone makes it a lot easier.

I would normally say we are pedestrian friendly, but two pedestrians have been killed in town this past week. One was an exchange student from Scotland who stepped in front of a bus while jogging. Speculation is that she looked right when she should have looked left.

I am lucky and have made various decisions so that I drive less than 5 miles most days, 25 mile trip every week or two, and a long (>100 miles) trip every month or two. Walking and buses do the rest.

Frankly, that happens a LOT here at DU too. People dissing other DU'ers who have 'figured some certain part of it" sooner than they did.

She probably makes just enough money to pay for a car and gas and some audio books. You work and don't have to spend money on all that stuff, sucker. You have to be burdened with all that money left over and nothing to spend on, plus, I'll bet you have to READ your books instead of listen to them.

PS I had a 4 cyl Honda before it got totaled in an accident. My friend sold me his V8 sports car very cheap so he could buy a more family friendly car. I was so happy I could finally drive a cool sports car til $4 a gallon came along. I miss my Honda.

That aside if I lived in the same town as my job I guarantee you i'd be biking every day - VERY common here in Holland. Cars are expensive (taxes, insurance, gas) and generally a nice bike is around 2-300€ spendy I know. You can get an electric bike for 600-1500, or a broom fiets (motor bike) thats basically a heavy framed bike with a small 2 stroke motor for 3-800€

Then there are the scooters. The lil vespas everyone talks about, and the like. They're rather nice, a lil spendy but the insurance isn't that bad. The problem is that most kids get them at 16 and paint the roads. So my wife REFUSES to let me get one.

I'm a cheap bastard and bought a crap bike for 50€. it has one gear that works...it comes with 21 LOL (but that's another rant).

I get reimbursed for my travel expenses however, so my 310€ a month for a train pass is compensated, and the 40€ i pay for the bus every day (a kind of punch card) is also covered. My employed pays 355€ for travel expenses (its like 19c a KM, and I max out at over 50Km per direction)

BTW.... easy rebuttal... "So.. How much was it to fill your tank today?"
