And so it begins. First the subtle charges of anti-Americanism begin to flow from the redneck wing of the Republican Party (where IS that flag pin, Mr. Senator . . . ), then it's only a matter of time before the more direct attacks against the man and his race begin.

It began this weekend as the Tennessee Republican party released a YouTube video attacking some out-of-context comments that Michelle Obama made during a campaign stop in Wisconsin in February. In that speech Michelle Obama said: "For the first time in my adult life, I am really proud of my country." Mrs. Obama later explained her remarks, when - taken in context - reveal that she was speaking of her pride in the fact that so many Americans are supporting the political process in this election year. But that matters not to the knuckle-draggers behind the video. In a news release that included a link to the video, Tennessee's GOP said "the Tennessee Republican Party has always been proud of America." It urged radio stations to play "patriotic music" during Michelle Obama's visit to Nashville last Thursday.

Senator Obama is not going to play that game, however. According to the AP, "Barack Obama has a message for Tennessee's Republican Party: 'Lay off my wife.' . . . . The GOP, should I be the nominee, can say whatever they want to say about me, my track record,' Obama said. 'If they think that they're going to try to make Michelle an issue in this campaign, they should be careful because that I find unacceptable, the notion that you start attacking my wife or my family.' He called the strategy 'low class.'"

Good for you, Senator. It's a ridiculous charge made by sad little people who will stop at nothing to keep you from the oval office. But it clearly indicates the Tennessee GOP feels you are the candidate to beat, because they're not attacking remarks by the OTHER potential First Family, Bill Clinton. Think of the heydey the various local GOP's could have with Bill Clinton's "history" and remarks should Hillary become the nominee. Brutal.

But the GOP has little substantive ammo to hurl against Sen. Obama, so these mini-minds are forced to resort to baseless, inane attacks against his wife, his lack of flag lapel pins, his former pastor, the university professor who lives in his neighborhood, etc. etc. Boy, they must be terrified about the likely McCain/Obama showdown in November.

They should be.
