Anyone else just a little suspicious...
...of the facts surrounding the desecreation of the Quran in Iraq? To wit:

1. The shooter was not an average soldier, but a section leader of a sniper team. Snipers by their nature and their training are some of the most thoroughly indoctrinated soldiers in the U.S. They are trained to be autonomous in the field and are deeply rooted in the doctrine of "mission accomplishment."

2. The shooter was immediately hustled out of country after the incident. No name, no arrest, no article 32 investigation.

3. The shooter left the evidence at a scene where it was sure to be found. Again, snipers are meticulous about everything in their lives. Leaving a single bullet case or evidence of their presence at a hide site is an anethema to them so to leave the Quran on the range sounds more planned than accident.

4. After the Quran was found the commanding general and then the insane President groveled in front of the world in apology. They have practically invited extremists to initiate an attack on U.S. citizens and U.S. interests.

5. Want to incite the Muslim world? Congratulations, it's done.

6. How many excuses is Shitstain Shoots-Guy-In-Face looking for to attack Iran? The answer, one. This smells of this little motherfucker and his criminal ways.

This is the match that lights the fuse towards an attack on Iran.

1. Possibly
There are other, less subtle signals that this might be happening, but your suggestion does make sense also.

2. I think it may have been a poor attempt at "morbid humor", but you have merit
Snipers are "traditionally" the most disciplined.

This may be another Iranian "poke" but aren't they more secular and less likely to fall for this obvious provocation?

3. Suspicious? No.
It was a juvenile, disrespectful act, and snarky juveniles are not known for their ability to plan well.

The idiot was very apologetic, too. Of course he was. He probably had his ass deservedly well-chewed by every piece of brass attached to the military chain of command.

I don't think this is the match of which you write. That will take some serious hardware, goading of the Iranian Air Force, and the deliberate sacrifice of one or more American soldiers or airmen.

6. If you've ever been around snipers as I have....
...you would know how false your statement is. Snipers are anything but juvenile.

7. I wasn't referring to snipers
It was the act committed by this particular sniper. My apologies if I was unclear about that.

Actually I was quite surprised to hear that it happened at all.

8. Which makes this that much more insidious...
Those guys are intelligent and professional, and do nothing by accident. They knew what the were doing, and expected the repercussions.

When I first heard the story, I thought it was some line dog being moronic. That it's a sniper is extremely disappointing.

Everyone has a breaking point, I guess.

4. If you buy the arguement that Bush is the anti-christ,
you may have something here.

5. What better way?
For the shooter to be immediately hustled out of the country? Perhaps that was his intent all along. The Quran, the Bible and the Yellow Pages are all the same to me (well, one actually has useful information compared to the other two), so if I wanted a ticket home, I wouldn't mind lining them up at the range and blasting away.
