Dream on, Pastor: Churches hope for stimulus checks:
While some Americans eye new televisions and tanks of gas, some Triad groups hope recipients of economic stimulus checks will use their extra cash more generously.

"Wouldn't it be nice if people gave at least some of that money back to something good?" said Heather DeDona, a member of Oak Ridge Presbyterian Church.

The church asked its members to consider donating all or part of their government stimulus checks to a church fund earmarked for charitable use. In the coming weeks, the congregation will consider about a dozen proposed local projects and vote on how to spend the money.

I really think they are dreaming; the majority of people I know will be using this check to pay bills, or buy food and gas.

3. They've Already Been Calling
The other day my wife told me about an acquaintance who had just gotten a $600 dollar check and bitched about how many calls she's gotten from her church to donate some of that money. She's a fundie, but not one that sticks it in your face and she's said in the past she's felt uncomfortable with the money demands of her church as times get tough. This is a single mom with two kids, their father is a deadbeat and this lady works two jobs to make ends meet, yet she said that she feels obligated to "tithing", but it's getting tougher when all the rest of her bills are going up as well.

No matter, I'm sure there will be plenty of churches that do get the $300, $600 and $1200 checks and if a person chooses to spend their bribe this way, so be it. As long as it's legal, it's their lives and their choice. I'm fortunate that I am still staying above water and that I can take my check and will donate it to Democratic candidates. I'm sure a fundie would say I'm crazy. And ya know...they're right!!
