The cull began on Commonwealth defence land yesterday after the department said a bitter cold winter would drive hundreds to starve. Six weeks ago, widespread protests and international media attention stopped the cull, with Defence investigating the prospect of moving them to another site instead. But the Federal Government said the cost of relocation - $3.5 million - was a waste of taxpayers' money.
Animal activists had asked former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney - a member of British animal group Viva! which has condemned the cull - to help pay for relocating the kangaroos. Mr Brennan (Animal Liberation) said the Rudd Government's estimated cost of relocating the kangaroos $3.5 million was "absolutely outrageous", with some activists saying it would cost just $750,000 to move the kangaroos elsewhere. Mr Brennan said protesters "had a few plans" up their sleeves for today and tomorrow but wouldn't elaborate. "It's upsetting, very upsetting," he said.
Environment Minister Peter Garrett refused to comment.
