Bumper sticker last night
"My son is in Iraq
Enjoy your freedom"

I'm not sure how to translate it. It could mean my son is in Iraq against his wishes because he was unfortunate enough to volunteer to join the military when a complete gibbering idiot was president, so enjoy your freedom. Or it could mean that somehow your enjoyment of freedom is at stake and their son was fighting for it in Iraq. Frankly that seems so far fetched I'm siding with interpretation #1.

Either way I hope their son gets home soon to enjoy freedom themselves.

2. It is a sick way of looking at the war.
People need to think that their kids are doing something positive. In actuality they are fighting and dying for the likes of Halliburton and big oil, not to for my freedoms. If people would ever get real maybe we wouldn't be in such a mess.

Also, we have lost more freedoms during the last 7 years than we have gained. Nice war isn't it?

3. Yeah, difficult to get his intent. The mystery sticker I saw read:
"My job is 911." What does that mean? Is he a fire-fighter, emergency planner, homeland security wonk, or terrorist? Or do they work at the 911 call center?

5. If he's driving around, then he must be a terrorist
Cuz we all know how safe we are under Dubya. They're so brazen now, they advertise it. They know he won't do anything about it, anyway.

10. Actually, it's the reverse
Because we attack Iraq unprovoked and without a plan we have made the world less safe. It also has fueled the fire of hate that the "terrorists" feed off of.

6. Eh, the way I see it, there aren't many bumper stickers that are meant to confuse people.
Usually they stick with a simple message, or at least one that doesn't have many interpretations. I'm thinking it's probably the second. It just seems more likely. If people really started thinking whenever they saw a bumper sticker we'd have a lot more accidents. Hmmm

16. Yeah, but its so easy and cheap to print something off without
looking at differing interpretations. I would guess that both stickers are intended to have a right-wing interpretation. A left-leaning message would (usually) be better written.

8. Not necessarily
volunteer to join the military when a complete gibbering idiot was president

They have 8-year commitments (4 on active duty, 4 in the reserves) now - it's entirely possible that this guy's son joined under Clinton (he's got his faults, but being a complete gibbering idiot is most definitely not one of them), and has just been called up and stop-lossed to the point where he's still on active duty 8 years later.

9. I wonder what her son would say
My daughter's childhood friend enlisted. He will be going on his 3rd tour in October. Talk about a complete turnaround. He says we are dying for nothing, in country that doesn't want us there, all so BUSH and his oil cronies can get rich.

I cannot tell you the change in this young man since he has been to Iraq. I can assure you that this is one GI who will NOT be voting for McShame.

12. my interpretation
Is that this parent is woefully misinformed as to the reasons for the war in Iraq. She or he is in total denial and is clinging to a simpleminded explanation as a way to justify supporting that son's mistake in joining the military and the horror of sleepless nights worrying about him. I would bet that above that bumper sticker affixed to the car was a magnetic ribbon and a flag decal on the window. The anger and resentment in that bumper sticker is palpable. Many parents rationalize and excuse their children's dangerous choices, whether it's drug addiction, alcoholism, drag car racing or going to war. This is another case of a child who made a stupid ill thought out career choice.

13. That bumper sticker is a sad reminder of a parent's understandable
need for denial. Most would find it very painful to think that their child's risks are for nothing but corporate profit and political gain.
