11. It isn't a spoof. It is a real car review from the UK.
Edited on Tue May-20-08 05:01 PM by SlipperySlope
The reviewer is Jeremy Clarkson.

For over twenty years he has released an annual video where he destroys his most hated car of the year. That year it was the Prius.

Here's another one that will piss someone off: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dr3MQvsrcSQ

Jeremy can be hilarious. I would hope anyone that would get pissed off at that clip has avoided seeing The Benny Hill Show.

20. Top Gear is my absolute favorite show on TV
bar none.

I loved the Stelvio Pass episode so much, I've burned it to DVD and sent it to a couple of friends.

21. Did you see the one where Jeremy races the two other guys to Sweden?
The race was from London to either Sweden or a spot in Norway, but Jeremy drives a Mercedes/McClaren SLR like this one;
while they took the ferry across the North Sea. Jeremy drives to the Channel Tunnel and puts the car on the train, but drives from the French side all the way up into Denmark and over the bridge/tunnel into Sweden.

Great show.

And I agree with Clarkson that the Prius is "God awful" in every way but fuel economy.

10. Yup, and thats why I wont own one.
Higher fuel milage is great, and always will be. But if a car is not enjoyable to drive, like being underpowered, handles like shit, and looks like shit, I'll gladly take something else.

I actually enjoyed the end when they were shooting it up :applause:

22. Well, I bought a Prius last July, and it is definately NOT
Edited on Tue May-20-08 06:53 PM by Trailrider1951
underpowered and handles like shit! I'll reserve that description for my last Toyota: a 1997 RAV-4. Compared to that "car", the Prius handles like a sports car! At least the RAV took me 170,000 trouble-free miles, which is more than I can say for the only sports car I've ever owned, a 1977 Triumph Spitfire, which was fun to drive when it ran, which wasn't often. It was far more a Failure than a Triumph, and was mostly garage sculpture. Speaking of British cars, where do these Brits get off trashing Toyotas, when their autos are such pieces of shit?

23. They do drive like crap to me.
I dunno, maybe its because I'm used to driving a real sports car the last 2 and a half years and thats what my preference really is. The only thing I liked about the Prius other than the cool LCD display telling you everything about the car, is that its easy to park.

I own an 01 Trans Am, and an 04 Dodge Dakota 4x4 BTW.

26. His "meh" attitude about the fuel economy is fair too.
The fuel economy of the Prius seems like such a big deal in the states very much because of the lack of cars that run on diesel. Diesel fuel contains more energy in the same amount of volume, and diesel engines are a more efficient design. He's used to such things being common.

28. But diesel costs more than regular and pollutes more.
I'm not a huge Prius fan, though. It's a fine car, but out of the budget of a lot of people (I personally will NEVER buy a car on credit).

There are a lot of great cars you can get used that get 35mpg or better.

As for new cars, the Honda Fit and Toyota Yaris are both very good. Doesn't the Ford Focus also get good mileage?

Point is, we should all try to move into more efficient cars and/or transit/cycling when possible.

I've never had a car that got worse than 35 mpg and have been mystified over the last decade or so as people bought bigger and bigger gas-guzzlers.

My first car was a Chevy (Suzuki) Sprint - It got over 50 mpg and was a fantastic little car with plenty of cargo space and adequate seating for 4. It was no speed demon, but it had adequate pep that I drove it back and forth between El Paso and San Diego several times.

I have 2 kids and have never had any trouble fitting them and their stuff into our little 4-door hatchbacks.

The whole SUV fever is based more on insecurity and pretension than it is on any sort of genuine need, IMO.

To be fair, even though Clarkson tends to loathe American cars with a passion, he really liked the Camaro he bought for his drive across the south.

I always enjoyed reading is commentary in The Times.

19. No, not really.
The only Top Gear I got to watch while I was in London last year was the Polar special where Clarkson and May drove the Hilux to the 1996 location of the Magnetic North Pole.

Wow, the Hilux is an impressive piece of machinery. Why can't we make them like that here?
