GIVE ME SCOOTERS OR GIVE ME DEATH!
And tax the crap out of any new huge SUVs to build more public transportation and more access and protective lanes for smaller, slower, gas-sippers.

1. They make scooters that have no problem keeping
up with traffic you know. I rode mine today on I-70 at 70 MPH with no problem and get 65 MPG.

23. Yep. A whole class of "Maxi-scooters"
including the Suzuki Bergman, Honda Silver Wing, Yamaha Majestic, and suchlike.

If you're looking to save some bucks, I think Kymco (a Taiwanese brand with an excellent rep for quality) might be the way to go. Their Exciting 500 is a solid buy at six grand:

http://www.strmotorsports.com/showroom/scooters/xciting500/index.html

...and they've got 250cc scoots, which are ok for the highway but probably not the best choice if you're going to be on the highway a lot, for around four grand.

I test-rode one a few years back (it was the Bet & Win 250--goofy name, I realize) and was really impressed with the handling, brakes, and overall performance.

6. How about this new three-wheel enclosed scooter?
It gets 70 mpg and has a top speed of 50mph and it's street legal. Pricey though at $7,000.

9. Just one
What is going to happen is our gas-guzzling culture is going to go away and we are going to have to live urban--really urban, walking our kids to smaller neighborhood schools, having neighborhood post offices, markets, etc. Housing will be built upward, not outward, and the saved space used for big green community green areas. We have several urban redevelopments just like that in Houston, and I must say they are quite acceptable.

12. I love that. I've been to the Sugarland area next to the new city hall.
I love that there is housing, jobs, entertainment, shopping, groceries, etc, all in a small area. If only more places could do this.

15. They will... they will have to.
My wife and I can't wait to move to a city for just that reason. Having cars is more restricting than liberating. If you live near where everything is, why do you need to have a car? I don't even want one any more.

Ciao :P

16. traditional high density urban areas with
high rises and the trappings of a metro downtown are not really necessary anymore. For example, I live in a planned community that would be considered by many as suburban "sprawl", but when you analyze the neighborhood, you find that within 2 miles from my house i currently have:
2 grade schools, 2 middle schools, 1 high school, 2 full service groceries, 12 screen movie theater, a dozen or so restaurants, a pharmacy, and within the next 6-9 months, the medical office park with a standalone emergency room will be complete. all of this with nary a building with more than 2 stories in sight.

38. And how about the jobs? How many jobs are available to that huge sprawl?
I live in a place exactly like you are describing. We have many companies out here. And they pay 1/3 less than if you commute.

So how do we deal with that?

40. Sweeeeeet!
It reminds me of a Norton 750 I tried to ride and managed to lay down at an intersection and had to have help getting it righted. Thus, I'm into smaller two-wheelers now.

I'm not very knowledgeable about "real" motorcycles. What kind is it?

But honey, they are no Honda or Yamaha and you'll buy 2-5 of them before replacing the Japanese bikes. I'm having a hard time deciding between these two. Thoughts?

35. BUT
A good friend whom I had encouraged to buy a scooter did so a year ago. Monday a car turned left if front of him as he was passing a truck on the right shoulder. He hit the front fender head on at 25 mph. Got thrown over the hood and into the curb. His helmet saved his head but he broke his arm, a rib, and fractured his pelvis which took 6 hours of surgery to pin together. He is in a recovery facility for a long time. He may need hip replacement in the future. Luckily he has good insurance as a retired State of California Park Ranger. I got hit on my bike in November at an unregulated intersection. Truck hit me dead center on his grill, into my left side. He was going about 15 to 20 mph he said. Concussion, lots of serious cuts and bruises, three broken ribs, stretched knee, and $10,000 in bills. No insurance. If you get on two wheels DRIVE SAFELY!. Bob

45. I think with the price of gas going up it will get safer to ride a bike or scooter.
Less traffic and smaller cars.

I would love to have a scooter, three wheels would better for going to stores.

We still need room for other people and whatever we buy.
