(Gambian) President plans to kill off every single homosexual
Gambian President Yahya Jammeh says he will “cut off the head” of any homosexual caught in his country.

...snip...

Jammeh also ordered any hotel or motel housing homosexuals to close down, adding that owners of such facilities would also be in trouble.

He said the Gambia was a country of believers, indicating that no sinful and immoral act as homosexual would be tolerated in the country.

He warned all homosexuals in the country to leave, noting that a legislation “stricter than those in Iran ” concerning the vice would be introduced soon.

as they do in Texas and Florida and other states.

26. Some of us may not be ruthless enough for the times.
Under these strictures, they would have to had killed off Michelangelo and Alexander owing to their private sexual preferences.

Which is problematic in Alexander's case, since he had the backing of a pretty good size army...

6. Nice right wing phraseology there
"religion of peace"?? Isn't that right off a Daniel "Crack" Pipes script??

Obviously persecution of gays is fucked up, but let's not go to the Freeper terminology of blanket hatred against Muslims. Which is just as fucked up as blanket hatred against gays, for that matter.

9. It has ceased to be a right wing meme
The defense of Islam has been it's a religion of peace.
Yet...in the last three years we've seen

1. The Pakistani Parliament protest the Dutch Movie using "Islam is a religion of peace" and then threaten to kill the producer.

2. Rushdie still lives under heavy security to be protected from Islamists.

3. Iran (and other Islamic countries) still continue to execute homosexuals.

4. The highest ranking Islamic clerics in Indonesia want the laws changed to classify an minority Islamic off-shoot to be classified as apostates. This would deprive the group of any legitimacy as a religion.

5. There are areas of Thailand where it is unsafe to travel because the Islamic separatist groups want the country to abandon Buddhism and institute Sharia law. They have killed over 100 people this year alone.

6. The woman who was raped in Saudi Arabia, was sentenced to at least 50 lashes. If the King had not caved under pressure from the INternational Community, this punishment would have been carried out.

7. Let's not forget the Danish cartoons of Mohammad

8. The genocide occurring in Darfur.

If you travel around Europe and Asia, you are hearing the same distain for Islam among centrists and leftists.

15. no, it's still a right wing meme. because people who tar
a whole religion for the actions of some practitioners or political regime are spreading right-wing memes, whether they acknowledge it or not.

your list is crap, no offense intended.

have read "Not just a right wing meme. It's now being used by leftists and centrists throughout Europe and eastern Asia."

As to the you thinking the list is crap...too bad.
It is not crap, just fact.

on edit: I'm not offended. We just disagree

but the cartoons were a bit of intentional, planned demagoguery, the situation in darfur is not as portrayed in the popular media, & what this all has to do with islam as an institution, i don't know. it's not as if the events on your list are all motivated by religion, nor is there a global islam directed by a central cabal.

in fact, anti-muslim feeling is being cynically whipped up & manipulated in the usual divide-&-conquer game.

serves no one but the master classes.

I have no respect for religions of discrimination, because "peace" without justice is nothing but a weak truce on the back of someone's (hopefully temporary and brief) status as lesser.

30. True, but there are not the amount of Christian fundies
who advocate and will act on the beheading of humans because they're gay/lesbian. They may take the longer, more drawn out approach of mentally mistreating them all of their lives. It's still horrible, but at least there are support groups that they can reach out to so that they can cope. (I know...they shouldn't have to)

22. Religion.
In this case, Islam. But there's nothing that unites the more extremist and theocratic Muslims, Catholics, Protestants and Jews, who are usually at each other's throats, than the need to denounce those eeeeeeevil sinners the gays!

Religion is great (any religion). Religious persecution of minorities is not.

29. I think its beyond offensive and shows the person posting such non-sense
does not understand that they them selves have issues with gay people. If someone truly sees gay people as equals they would never equate a benign immutable trait with evil.

34. Our "main marketing objective is to go up-market and attract high-spending tourists.."
Curious tactic, then, to threaten anyone gay with decapitation.. and presumably anyone who could be mistaken for gay:

President shit-for-brains himself

snip-
"Tourism is important in The Gambia as a leading foreign exchange earner and one of the pillars to eradicate poverty. The government's policy is to promote tourism and its contribution to economic growth. Our objective is to increase the contribution of tourism to our economy and to raise the living standards of Gambians. The government is continuing its efforts to broaden the tourism market, improve quality standards, and ensure rational use of the Tourism Development Area."
snip-
"In terms of cultural heritage The Gambia has a high degree of ethnic diversity and offers a wide range of visitor experience within its limited land area. These attractions include performing arts – dance, music, which are highly developed, while Gambian cuisine is diverse and attractive..."
