WASHINGTON, June 4 (KUNA) -- US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Sunday that Iran has weeks, not months to respond to the latest incentives package put forth by the United States and its European partners.
Speaking to Fox News Sunday, Rice said, "we really do have to have this settled over a matter of weeks, not months." But she added that a proposal of this kind will take the Iranians "a little bit of time" to look over. The offer put forth by the United States, Great Britain, Germany, France, China and Russia is a package of carrots and sticks intended to persuade Iran to give up its nuclear enrichment program.
Although the details of the package presented to Iran were not made public, diplomats said the deal included nuclear reactors as well as security guarantees for Tehran. Iran has argued that its nuclear program is for civilian energy purposes and that it has a right, under international treaties, to pursue nuclear technology.
But the Bush administration has pressured its allies to try and halt Iranian nuclear ambitions, which the United States has argued is intended for the development of a nuclear weapon.
